IceDogs Can’t Shake Steelheads
NIAGARA, ON – The Niagara IceDogs put up a spirited effort on Sunday afternoon at the Meridian Centre, but ultimately fell to the Brampton Steelheads in a 6-2 loss to move to (29-28-4-4) on the season.
The visitors struck first, as Lucas Karmiris opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game. However, the IceDogs responded in highlight-reel fashion moments later, with Ryan Roobroeck showcasing his skill on a breakaway, netting his 40th goal of the season off a perfect setup from Ethan Czata. The momentum was short-lived as Brampton regained the lead midway through the period, with Aidan Lane and Carson Rehkopf adding first-period tallies to give the Steelheads a 3-1 edge after 20 minutes.
Niagara came out with energy in the second, cutting the deficit to one when Blair Scott jumped into the rush and buried his second goal of the season off a crisp pass from Sean Doherty. The IceDogs continued to push for the equalizer, generating several quality chances, but Brampton added an insurance marker late in the frame, as Gabriel Chiarot extended their lead to 4-2 heading into the third.
Brampton capitalized on their opportunities in the final period, adding two more goals to secure the win. Kieran Witkowski struck early in the third, followed by Konnor Smith finding the back of the net to seal the result for the visitors.
Despite the final score, the IceDogs showed flashes of offensive creativity and resilience, with Roobroeck continuing to be a force up front and Scott stepping up with a big goal from the blue line.
Niagara will look to bounce back in their next matchup as they hit the road to take on Ottawa 67’s on March 20th at the Meridian Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM.
