GAME RECAP | IceDogs close out year with 6-5 win against 67’s
The Niagara IceDogs won 6-5 against the Ottawa 67’s in their annual New Year’s Eve game. The match-up against Ottawa was in front of a raucous sell-out crowd of 5600 fans.
During the middle of the first period, the ‘Dogs combined to successfully kill three penalties, including two 5-on-3s and a 5-on-4! Oliver Castleman kicked off the scoring for tonight’s game. His powerplay marker, his third in two games, was a snipe from the faceoff circle assisted by Drew Hunter and Jacob Paquette. Exactly thirty seconds later, Castleman scored again! Akil Thomas sent a pass from the edge of the circle for Castleman’s shot through the slot.
Ottawa’s powerplay goal started the second period’s scoring, but they weren’t able to hold the ‘Dogs back for long! Matt Philip also scored on the powerplay off a bouncing puck, assisted by Paquette and Hunter. Towards the end of that period, Jake Uberti sent a drop pass to Andrew Bruder, who scored to increase the lead to 4-1. The secondary assist was credited to Ethan Sims, which got him his first OHL career point in his first game! With 43 seconds to go, Thomas scored shorthanded, assisted by Captain Ben Jones.
Kirill Maksimov scored the lone IceDogs goal of the third, off of a Jones through the slot shot. Ottawa scored three times throughout the rest of the period, but the ‘Dogs remained strong to emerge victoriously with the 6-5 win.
The IceDogs finished the first half of their season much like they began it: with a win, this time 6-5 against the 67’s.
The ‘Dogs are back in action in 2019, starting off the new year with two home games! The London Knights come to town on Thursday January 3rd. The next night, on Friday the 4th, they play against the visiting Erie Otters.
