Calum Ritchie taken 27th overall by Colorado
Oshawa, ON– Calum Ritchie has been selected in the 1st round, 27 overall by the Colorado Avalanche, in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft in Nashville, Tenn. Ritchie joins Michael Dal Colle, Scott Laughton, and Niklas Jensen as the most recent Generals to be chosen in the first round.
The Oakville, Ont, native was the Generals’ 2nd overall selection in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection and has been making a name for himself ever since both in Oshawa and on the international stage ever since.
In his debut season with the Generals, Ritchie put up an impressive 45 points, by way of 19 goals and 26 assists in 64 games. His production continued into the playoffs with seven points in a first-round series against the Kingston Frontenacs.
In his second year with the team, Ritchie proved to be one of the league’s top forwards. In 59 games, he scored 24 goals and added 35 assists – all while battling a shoulder injury throughout the entire season. In a first-round series against the top-seeded Ottawa 67’s, Ritchie scored six points in five games.
Throughout the year Ritchie battled through his injury to continuously prove his worth. NHL Central Scouting’s Final rankings recognized the adversity, ranking him 13th in North America
He will be one of the OHL’s top forwards ahead of the 2023-2024 team and will be a key factor in the Generals’ continued climb back up the standings following an 8th-place finish.
