COLTS TO RAISE BANNERS TONIGHT AGAINST NIAGARA
On a night in which the Barrie Colts honoured last year’s record-breaking team, it was former coach Marty Williamson who left the BMC with his fourth win of the season.
John Chartrand stopped 27 of 28 shots and was named first star, as Niagara posted three goals in the final period and knocked off their division rival 4-1.
Another third period melt down led to the Colts second straight loss. Friday night in Kitchener Barrie allowed a handful of goals in the final stanza and lost 7-5. On Saturday Niagara scored the only three goals of the third and broke open what was a 1-1 game.
Alex Friesen opened the scoring for the IceDogs at the 5:03 mark of the first. Former Colt Ryan Strome and Freddie Hamilton assisted on the power play goal.
Barrie would tie things up in the second period as Dalton Prout blasted home a point shot on the power play. Colin Behenna and Mark Scheifele assisted on Prout’s first of the season in his home debut. The newly named captain now has three points in his first two games of the year.
Andrew Agozzino scored the first of three in the third for Niagara. After being robbed by Peter Di Salvo moments earlier, Agozzino snapped an identical shot that Di Salvo was unable to catch up to. David Pacan assisted on what would hold up to be the game-winning marker, he then went on to set up Steven Shipley on the power play 4:33 later.
Strome made the most of his return to Barrie, he added his second helper on a Jason Wilson goal late in the third, making the final 4-1 IceDogs.
Before the game the Colts held their banner raising ceremony, hoisting three banners to the roof of the BMC to honour last year’s team. The Colts won the Central Division title, the Eastern Conference Championship and the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as the league’s top team in the regular season.
