COLTS FINALLY BEAT SUDBURY
The Barrie Colts won their second consecutive game Thursday night at the Barrie Molson Centre. The Colts did something they haven’t been able to do all season long; beat the Sudbury Wolves.
The Colts scored twice in each period and skated to a 6-3 win over the Wolves.
Sudbury won seven of eight against Barrie this year, the same record the Colts had against the Wolves a season ago.
Clint Windsor allowed the first goal of the game but would then settle in and make 34 saves for the victory.
Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists while Mitch Bennett, Eric Locke and Steven Beyers all had a goal and an assist. Matt Ashman, nearing the end of his OHL career, contributed a couple of points.
Petr Beranek and Colin Behenna also scored for Barrie, who will enjoy an off-day on Friday.
After Brody Silk made it 1-0 Sudbury the Colts bounced back with goals coming less than four minutes apart to take a 2-1 advantage after the first.
Mark Scheifele got things started with a back-hand that beat Jacob Riley; Beyers and Ashman picked up the helpers.
Petr Beranek followed that up with a goal assisted by Tanner Pearson and Norm Ezekiel.
Mitch Bennett would have his best offensive period of the season in the second as he set up Eric Locke and then scored his second of the year from Trent Hawke and Mackenzie Braid.
The teams would alternate goals in the final frame, with three of the four markers coming with the extra attacker.
Joshua Leivo and Alex Racino scored for Sudbury, while Beyers and Behenna would cap the night off for the Colts.
11 different Colts had points and five players had multi-point games for Barrie.
The Colts got a break with Alain Valiquette, who was perfect against the Colts in seven games this season, getting the night off in favour of Jacob Riley.
Riley was removed from the game after allowing four goals on 24 shots.
Barrie will host the Belleville Bulls on Saturday night, and then travel to Brampton for a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Sunday.
