Colts charge back to beat Frontenacs 5-4
By Doug Graham, Kingston Whig-Standard
The Barrie Colts and gifted forward Joseph Blandisi kicked back with authority on the Kingston Frontenacs Friday night.
Despite a hat-trick performance from Robert Polesello and a 4-2 lead in the second period by the Frontenacs, it was the Colts, behind Blandisi’s three goals, who came away with a 5-4 Ontario Hockey League victory before 3,944 fans at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.
Blandisi, a speedy, overage forward, finished his big game with a shorthanded goal at 7:17 of the third period for the game-winner.
Blandisi used Roland McKeown as a screen and fired a wrist shot low on the glove side to beat goaltender Jeremy Helvig.
The Frontenacs’ comeback attempt over the final half of the third period was thwarted by goaltender Daniel Gibl, who pitched a shutout in his half-game of relief for starting goalie Jordan DeKort.
The Frontenacs fired half of their 38 shots in the third period. Sam Schutt, from in close and with the goalie out of position, ripped a shot wide in one of the best late-game Kingston scoring chances.
“Give them credit. They came back to win. But we as a team have to be better. It is a good lesson for us to learn from,” head coach Paul McFarland said as he saw his club’s record fall to 5-4-1.
There was no question this was one that got away from the Frontenacs, who built a 4-2 lead when Juho Lammikko scored to chase starter DeKort from the Barrie net.
“It’s a good lesson for us. I don’t think a lot of guys came ready to play. We probably got what we deserved,” McFarland said.
Blandisi was a much-discussed opponent before the game but he managed to burn the Frontenacs with two nifty plays around the net.
