Magwood Sends Colts into Christmas Break with an Overtime Victory
Zach Magwood finished off a beautiful two on one in overtime in a 4-3 victory to send the Colts into the Christmas break on a winning note.
It was the last game before the break and billet appreciation night for the Barrie Colts and they were looking to give their family and fans an early Christmas gift with a win.
Ruan Badenhorst got the nod and was making his first appearance of the season. The Tiny Township native played a strong first period with only one mishap.
Nearing the end of the period Ottawa’s leading point getter Artur Tyanulin took advantage of Barrie’s defenseman Cam Lizotte without a stick, as he stepped out front and netted the backhander for his 14th of the season, giving Ottawa the 1-0 lead.
In the second period the Colts were gifted a five on three power-play and they made Ottawa pay. Anthony Stefano pounced on a juicy rebound and ripped it top corner for his 11th of the season. The assists went to Matt Brassard and Tom Hedberg on the tying goal.
It seemed to spark the boys as just moments later it was Lucas Chiodo finishing off a beautiful passing play for his 11th of the season as well. Ben Hawerchuk and Zach Magwood helped put together the go ahead marker.
Midway through the frame it was an early Christmas gift for Jaden Peca, scoring his first career OHL goal. He danced his way out front and nearly had one he would definitely not forget as he weaved his way through a couple of defenders, but was stopped. He stayed with the play and received a pass from Aidan Brown and put it home this time for the milestone marker. Jason Willms picked up the other assist on the insurance marker.
That goal had the Colts buzzing, but it wasn’t them who struck next. Ottawa’s Tyanulin was sprung on a two on one that he fed over to Austen Keating who finished it off cutting the lead to one.
Less than a minute into the 3rd period Ottawa took advantage of a five on three power-play as well. Patrick White buried the tying marker, setting up an exicting third period.
On the same Ottawa power-play Chiodo was in search of his second of the game as he was sprung loose on a shorthanded breakaway but was stopped by Oliver Lafreniere keeping the score tied which sent the game to overtime.
