Late Surge by the Dogs pushes them past Colts 5-3
A goal courtesy of Matthew Philip, that Colts netminder David Ovsjannikov would want back gave the Ice Dogs a 4-3 lead late in the third that lead to victory.
The Barrie Colts were coming off of the Christmas Break on a winning note fresh off of a victory over the 67’s. It was a bittersweet game for a lot of Colts fans as they saw Roy Radke return to the lineup to take on the Ice Dogs but just yesterday, defenseman and Barrie native Matt Brassard was traded to the Oshawa Generals for picks.
Barrie came out hot peppering Stephen Dhillon with lots of shots and coming up with some good scoring chances on an early power-play opportunity. They weren’t able to beat him as it stayed scoreless until the midway mark of the first.
Niagara’s Danial Singer was sprung on a breakaway by Oliver Castleman at his own blue-line before finishing it off by outsmarting Colts netminder David Ovsjannikov for his 5th goal of the season giving the Dogs the early lead.
After a strong first period Barrie was looking to generate some offense and get on the board. Just 1:15 into the frame Ben Hawerchuk threw a harmless shot on goal and beat Dhillon for his 3rd goal of the season. Roy Radke and Lucas Chiodo picked up the assists.
Just a couple minutes later it was Giordano Finoro grabbing a loose puck and going in on a two on one and he snapped a shot towards the goal that hit off of a Niagara defensemans stick and past Dhillion for his 5th goal of the year to give the Colts their first lead of the game.
Midway through the period on a Barrie powerplay the scoring continued. Radke found Aidan Brown cutting towards the goal with a strong pass to the front of the net that he directed in for his 2nd goal of the season. Kade Landry drew the other assist on the insurance marker.
A couple minutes later on a Niagara power-play they took advantage. Akil Thomas tipped in a Christopher Pacquette shot from the top of the circle cutting into the Barrie lead. Anthony Mantha also picked up an assist.
The Dogs didn’t let up as just moments later it was Ondrej Machala finding the top corner for his 4th of the season tying things at three.
The Dogs would score a late one to make it a two-goal victory and improve their record to 3-0-0-1 vs. Barrie this season.
