Colts surge past the Petes 6-4 to close out the weekend
A quick start would set the pace for the Colts, and Dmitry Sokolov would score his 47th and 48th goals of the season leading the Barrie Colts to a 6-4 victory over the Peterborough Petes.
With his two markers, Sokolov would take over the league lead in goals while pushing his point streak to 13 games.
Andrei Svechnikov picking up 2 assists would also extend his point streak to 20 games and
After facing a busy night two nights prior against Owen Sound, rookie Kai Edmonds would get the start again, his 18th of the season and make 24 saves in the win.
With the playoff teams all determined in the Eastern Conference, and the Petes already eliminated from the post season, the Colts would be playing their last four games of the regular season for position still having a chance to catch Hamilton for the top spot.
The Colts would come out fast a furious in this one, getting three past Dylan Wells in a span of a minute, 8 seconds.
Joey Keane would get the puck to the net quickly, Sam Rhodes left all alone down low would get a fortunate bounce burying the opening goal for his 3rd of the season with Luke Bignell picking up the second assist on the opening marker.
Seconds later back in the Petes end Svechnikov coming around the net would find Luchuk alone in front shoveling a shot over the pad of Wells to make it 2-0 adding to his league leading goal total with his 47th of the season.
Some great puck movement by Ben Hawerchuck and Jaden Peca would continue the scoring. Dylan Wells would make the original save but Jason Willms would get a second crack at it, banging it home at the side of the net for his 26th to give themselves a huge 3-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
The Petes would settle things down after taking a timeout and force Edmonds to make a number of key saves, actually outshooting Barrie 16-10 at the end of one period.
Peterborough would keep that momentum going coming out the gate with two quick goals to start the second. Just eight seconds into the middle frame Nikita Korostelev would get one past Edmonds.
Just over a minute later a turnover at centre would lead to an odd man rush for the Petes. Pavel Gogolev would race up ice sending a pass across to Nick Robertson finishing it by Edmonds quickly making it just a one goal game again.
Nearing the midway point of the second the Colts would regain the two goal lead.with Sokolov and Svechnikov on a two on one, Sokolov would keep the puck himself making a beautiful fake cutting to the net and burying his 47th of the year to match the league lead. Luchuk would also assist on the play.
Just a minute later, Sokolov would add his second of the night on the powerplay rocketing one over the shoulder of Wells. His 48th, assisted by Svechnikov and T.J. Fergus.
In the third, the scoring would wait until almost halfway through the period this time. The Petes would get back within two after Brady Hinz would find Adam Timleck out front, one timing it past Edmonds, cutting Barrie’s lead back to 5-3.
T.J Fergus would seal the victory for the Colts from deep in his own end firing one into the empty net for his 7th of the season.
The Colts will begin the final week of the season schedule Thursday March 15th as the Ottawa 67’s will visit the Molson Centre for a 7:30pm puck drop.
