Colts Battle Hard, Fall 5–4 in Shootout to Soo Greyhounds
The Barrie Colts battled in a back-and-forth contest against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Thursday night, ultimately falling 5–4 in a shootout at Sadlon Arena.
The scoring opened in the first period when Nicholas Desiderio (#2) recorded his first career OHL goal at 14:50, assisted by Bode Stewart (#71) and Cole Emerton (#41). The Greyhounds responded shortly after to even the score 1–1 heading into the first intermission. Barrie struck quickly in the second frame as Carter Lowe (#85) scored on a feed from Joe Salandra (#15) and Ethan Armstrong (#23) to restore the lead. Minutes later, Brad Gardiner (#25) extended the advantage to 3–1, finishing off a setup from Salandra and Lowe. The Greyhounds answered to cut the lead in half before the end of the period.
On the power play late in the second, Kashawn Aitcheson (#77) scored his first of the season at 17:39, with assists from Salandra and Emerton, giving the Colts a 4–2 cushion. Sault Ste. Marie pushed back once again, tallying twice to tie the game 4–4 and send the contest to overtime.
Following a scoreless extra frame, the shootout determined the outcome. Barrie shooters Alex Assadourian (#9) and Joe Salandra (#15) were denied by Greyhounds goaltender Landon Miller. Colts netminder Ben Hrebik turned aside two Soo attempts, but Ryan Kaczynski (#89) capitalized with the deciding goal to give the visitors the win.
Despite the setback, Barrie saw strong individual performances, including Salandra’s three-assist night and a pair of multi-point efforts from Lowe and Emerton.
The Colts will look to bounce back as they continue their weekend games, hosting the Ottawa 67’s this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Sadlon Arena.
