Luke Adam Leads QMJHL to Game Two Win in Subway Super Series
Four points by Luke Adam and a flurry of five second period goals led Team QMJHL to a two-game sweep in the first leg of the 2009 Subway Super Series earning the 8-3 victory over Team Russia Wednesday night in Shawinigan in front of 4047 fans at the Centre Bionest.
Adam opened the scoring for Team QMJHL just 2:05 into the first period set up by linemates Jacob Legace and Nicolas Deschamps who also contributed with lots of physical play throughout the game. The trio connected on four goals in the game including the final two of the third period to ice the game for Team QMJHL.
Adam, who plays with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, was named Team QMJHL Player of the Game with two goals and two assists finishing the opening leg of the series with a team-high five points.
“I just tried to keep things simple” Adam told Louis Jean of Rogers Sportsnet following the game. “I played with some great players who made things really easy for me.”
Team Russia managed to escape the first period with their first lead of the series with a 2-1 advantage on goals from captain Kirill Petrov at 10:30 and Maxim Kitsyn at 16:31.
The lead was short lived when Kelsey Tessier tipped a Michael Bournival shot from the point on the power play at 5:07 to tie the game. His goal was the first of four unanswered in the second frame with Adam, Gabriel Bourque, and Marc-Olivier Vachon also contributing in quick succession. Nikita Pivtsakin returned some hope for Team Russia with a power play goal late in the period until Philippe Cornet extended the QMJHL lead to three goals heading into the final frame.
Louis Domingue made 11 saves earning the victory after taking over for Maxime Clermont who started the game with 12 saves. Igor Bobkov took the loss making 35 saves.
Game three of the 2009 Subway Super Series shifts to Barrie, Ontario, on Thursday November 19 with a 7:00 pm puck drop.
