2021 Gervais-Munger Award | David Doucet, Acadie-Bathurst
The Gervais-Munger Award for Academic Perseverance recognizes a player who demonstrates rigor, diligence, and perseverance to ensure their academic success. These are qualities that we can, without a doubt, find in our candidate, David Doucet.
David faced challenges early in his hockey career. In 2017 he played for Notre Dame Academy where he had to begin studying in his second language, English. He has continued to study in English with excellence. Since that first year he has also attended Newbridge Academy and Sidney Academy of Cape Breton. He joined the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in December 2019 and upon completion of his fall courses we enrolled him at Bathurst High School.
From the beginning, it was quite evident that David was determined to be successful and graduate from high school in June of 2021. This would not be unproblematic as he was missing a few credits and he realized that he would have to be committed to get caught up. During the Winter Session of 2020, David took an extra course online. This was at the time that COVID-19 broke out and completing courses was not easy, but through hard work and dedication, he was successful. In the Fall Session of 2020, David, once again was successful in four courses. He did this in spite of developing strep-throat in December, which eventually led to scarlet fever. Not only did he complete his courses but maintained excellent grades. Determined to graduate in June of this year, David, is enrolled in four courses, the remaining credits necessary for his high school graduation. We are confident that David will be graduating with honours.
David is always persistent in chasing his dreams both academically and on the ice. If something is not right, he perseveres to correct the situation. If he is not comfortable with a course, he persists in asking for help.
His seriousness about his education and hard work sets an excellent example for the other players. He is an outstanding ambassador for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and we are very proud of his continuing dedication throughout his educational journey.
David Doucet is a worthy recipient of the Gervais-Munger Award for Academic Perseverance.
