The Wildcats were at the Iamgold Arena last night as they faced the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for game one of their three game Quebec road trip. It game marked the first time that the Wildcats were back in Rouyn after their playoff run last season.
It was Moncton again who recorded the first goal of the game, a trend that seems to be continuing for the team. Captain Lane Cormier recorded his second of the season on the power play at 14:23 of the opening frame to give Moncton what they hoped was some early momentum. However, ten seconds later Rouyn would respond with a goal by Félix Bibeau to tie the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.
To start the second Martins Dzierkals notched a short handed marker to give the hometown Huskies the lead for the first time this game. Wildcats leading scorer Cam Askew would record his 11th of the year on a feed from Zach Malatesta and newcomer Duncan MacIntyre. It was a close back and forth battle all game with the lead changing hands as both of these clubs put up a good fight. Gabriel Fontaine would add one more for the Huskies before the end of the frame, giving them a 3-2 lead after two periods.
The rest of the game was all Moncton! Cam Askew recorded his second of the night, while the team was shorthanded to tie the game at 3-3. Moncton continued to pour on the pressure with some great chances late in the frame. The game winning goal came from Aspirot at 18:35, coming down on a two on one, Manuel Wiederer fed Aspirot the pass and he made no mistake finding the back of the net! This one goes in the books as a 4-3 Wildcats victory!
Matt Waite had a solid performance in nets tonight facing 23 shots while Moncton managed 22 shots on goal. First star tonight went to Cam Askew with two goals and an assist, while Wiederer was named third star with two assists.
