SUBWAY GAME RECAP: One for All Festival presented by TD Comes to an End with 5-3 Loss
Jakob Robillard stopped 39 of the 42 shots he faced as the Charlottetown Islanders (21-27-5-1) handed the Saint John Sea Dogs (19-33-1-1) their third straight loss 5-3 on Monday afternoon. Noah Reinhart, Pavel Simek and Luka Benoit had the goals for the Sea Dogs while Olivier Brideau made 25 saves in goal.
Simon Hughes led the Islanders with a pair of goals while Jérémie Biakabutuka had a goal and an assist and Giovanni Morneau added two assists.
Simek had the first quality chance for the Sea Dogs just over five minutes in with a great rush up the right wing and to the net only for Robillard to stop his backhand shot and the second chance by Benoit on the doorstep.
The Sea Dogs went to work on a four minute power play shortly after, maintaining a heavy forecheck with a couple of good chances, but none of them found the back of the net.
Nico Laforge came close as well with just under seven minutes left in the period, finding the puck at the side of a wide open Islanders net, only for Robillard to make an incredible right pad save on the goal line.
Noah Reinhart found an open lane to the net two minutes later, but Robillard once again stood tall and shut the door.
Alexis Michaud almost rewarded his goaltenders efforts just over a minute later, stealing the puck in the Sea Dogs’ zone for a shot from the slot, but Brideau was equal to the task and made the save.
Charlottetown broke the scoreless deadlock in the dying seconds of the period as Ross Campbell circled out from behind the Saint John net and set up Biakabutuka who one-timed the puck past Brideau with 0.3 seconds left to give the Islanders the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Shots were 13-8 for the Sea Dogs after the first.
Peter Repcik nearly added the Islanders lead eight minutes into the second as he snuck in behind the Sea Dogs defense for a breakaway only to have Brideau shut the door.
Lucas Romeo came close two minutes later, collecting the puck in front and almost outwaiting Brideau but the Saint John netminder got just enough of the puck with his left pad to keep it out.
With two minutes left in the period, and the Sea Dogs on the power play, Nate Tivey fired a point shot and Reinhart poked the ensuing rebound underneath and past Robillard to tie the game 1-1.
The Islanders answered back just 1:02 later as Anton Topilnyckyj fed the puck down low to Morneau who put a cross crease pass over to Simon Hughes who put the puck home to make it 2-1 Islanders heading into the third.
Shots after the third were 27-20 for the Sea Dogs.
Just over five minutes into the third, Simek found Eriks Mateiko with a pass from behind the net for a point blank chance, but Robillard came up with another big save for the Islanders to maintain the lead.
Three minutes later Charlottetown created some breathing room as Biakabutuka won a battle along the boards and found Kiefer Lyons all alone in front who tucked the puck past Brideau to make it 3-1.
The Islanders put the game out of reach with 6:37 remaining as Hughes put a shot on that took a couple of bounces before finding its way past Brideau to make it a 4-1.
Two minutes later Alex Drover fished a puck out of a scrum in the slot and drove the net for a shot that Robillard stopped but Simek buried the rebound to make it 4-2.
That’s as close as the Sea Dogs would get as Michael Horth put home an empty netter with 2:20 left and Benoit added another for the Sea Dogs with 29.1 seconds to go to make it a 5-3 final.
Final shots in the game were 42-30 for the Sea Dogs.
