RECAP: Sea Dogs upset in Halifax after third period stumble
HALIFAX, NS – A third-period surge by the Halifax Mooseheads stunned the Saint John Sea Dogs, handing them a 3-2 loss Saturday night at Scotiabank Centre. Despite the outcome, the Sea Dogs put up a strong effort outshooting the Mooseheads 37-24.
Jacob Beaulieu netted his third goal of the season, while rookie William Yared scored his seventh, maintaining his lead among Sea Dogs rookies in goals.
Mooseheads goals came from Jan Sprynar, Liam Kilfoil, and Lou Lévesque.
GAME SUMMARY
A turnover by the Sea Dogs landed on the stick of Jan Sprynar, who fired a shot, collected his own rebound, and buried it past Justin Robinson at 8:47 of the first period. At the 15:26 mark, Sea Dogs forward Dylan Rozzi blocked a shot in the defensive zone, sparking a breakaway for Jacob Beaulieu who sniped the puck top corner tying the game at 1-1.
Five minutes into the second period, the Sea Dogs took the lead. Nicolas Bilodeau’s shot was mishandled by Mathis Rousseau, leaving the puck on the doorstep for William Yared to bury it, making it 2-1.
The Mooseheads tied the game just 1:33 into the third period when Liam Kilfoil scored shorthanded on a penalty shot, beating Robinson glove side. Halifax sealed the win at 6:20 when Carlos Händel sent a bouncing pass to Lou Lévesque, who fired it over Robinson’s shoulder for the game-winning goal.
NOTES
- Eriks Mateiko, Tyler Peddle, and Olivier Duhamel were all out of the lineup with injuries.
- William Yared now leads all Sea Dogs rookies in goals with seven.
- Halifax picked up their first win against Saint John in three meetings so far this season.
