RECAP: Sea Dogs stumble in Charlottetown in final road game
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – During the first of their back-to-back encounters this weekend, the Saint John Sea Dogs fell to the Charlottetown Islanders with a 6-2 loss at the Eastlink Centre on Saturday night.
The first period kicked off quickly with Nate Tivey finding himself in the penalty box for high sticking just over two minutes in. Cole Huckins capitalized on the powerplay at 3:58, giving Charlottetown a 1-0 lead. The Islanders carried that momentum forward with William Shields extending the gap to two goals. The Sea Dogs found themselves in trouble again when Drew Elliott was penalized for roughing, leading to Ross Campbell’s powerplay goal at 14:25, putting the Islanders up by three. The first period ended with the Islanders leading in shots, 14-9.
The Sea Dogs came to life when Tyler Peddle, assisted by Coen Miller and Brody Fournier, narrowed the gap going top-shelf on the Islanders netminder at 5:54. However, Simon Hughes wasted no time scoring just 18 seconds later to take back the three-goal lead for Charlottetown. Fournier, continuing his solid performance, netted his 22nd of the season just shy of the second period’s close, leaving the Sea Dogs trailing 4-2. Shots on goal were in favour of the Islanders, 28-20.
In the third period, Matthew Butler’s solo effort at 9:22 extended the Charlottetown Islanders lead to 5-2. The Sea Dogs pulled their goalie at 17:59 for the extra attacker, but Alexis Michaud sealed the win for the Islanders with an empty-net goal at 19:06, finalizing the game, 6-2. The Islanders controlled the final shot count, 44-25.
