RECAP: Sea Dogs edged out in overtime by Saguenéens
SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs took on the Chicoutimi Saguenéens at TD Station on Sunday afternoon in a closely contested game. Despite a strong performance, the Sea Dogs fell 2-1 in overtime, adjusting their season record to 11-13-1-3.
The game had an unfortunate start for the Sea Dogs as defenceman Benjamin Amyot was injured just 32 seconds in and had to be aided off the ice. Saguenéens defenceman Johnathan Prud’Homme received a slashing penalty at 6:57, but the Sea Dogs were unable to capitalize on the powerplay. Another Saguenéens tripping penalty led to a powerplay for the Sea Dogs shortly after, yet it was successfully killed off. The period ended scoreless with the Sea Dogs trailing slightly in shots, 8-6.
Tensions rose in the second period at 3:58 with a scrum after the whistle, resulting in Matteo Mann of the Sea Dogs and Lucas Boisvert of the Saguenéens both being sent to the box for roughing. Pavel Simek nearly scored for the Sea Dogs but rang one off the post at 9:45. The Sea Dogs went ahead at 16:05 with Eriks Mateiko scoring his 15th of the season, triggering the annual Teddy Bear Toss. The Saguenéens quickly responded with Samuel Vachon tying the game at 17:44. The second period finished with the score tied at one, shots 20-19 in favour of Chicoutimi.
The Sea Dogs faced a roughing penalty on Mann at 7:57, followed by an interference penalty against the Saguenéens at 9:11. Nate Tivey also got penalized for cross-checking at 14:42. Despite a high-energy third period with lots of scoring opportunities for the Sea Dogs, the game was sent to overtime with shots at 27-25 in favour of the Sea Dogs.
The Sea Dogs had some close chances, but the Saguenéens scooped the win up with Thomas Desruisseaux scoring the deciding goal. The final tally was 2-1 for the Saguenéens, with the Sea Dogs narrowly outshooting them 28-27.
Saint John continues its home stand on Wednesday night as the Drummondville Voltigeurs come to town at 7pm. Tickets are available at the TD Station box office, by calling (506) 657-1234 or online at tickets.tdstation.com.
