RECAP: Sea Dogs comeback falls short in tough loss to Cataractes
SHAWINIGAN, QC – In their second and final matchup of the year, the Saint John Sea Dogs took on the Shawinigan Cataractes, suffering a 5-3 loss. The game, played in Shawinigan, saw the Sea Dogs making efforts to rally, but they were unable to overcome the Cataractes.
The first period opened with an early goal from Cataractes forward Éli Baillargeon at 2:34, setting the tone for the first period. The Sea Dogs found themselves trailing 1-0 as the period concluded, with shots favoring the Cataractes 11-5.
Shawinigan’s momentum carried over into the second with former Sea Dog Vince Élie finding twine at 5:10, followed by Félix Lacerte’s goal at 6:29, expanding their lead to three. The Sea Dogs showed signs of life when Eriks Mateiko scored an unassisted goal at 10:35. However, Jiri Klima answered back for the Cataractes at 15:48, leaving the Sea Dogs trailing 4-1 at the end of the second period, with shots on goal 26-10 in favor of the home team.
The third period saw a revival from the Sea Dogs, with Coen Miller scoring at 2:36, set up by Joseph Ianiello and Brody Fournier. Drew Elliott further tightened the gap to 4-3, scoring off assists from Nate Tivey and Tyler Peddle. Despite the late push, the Cataractes sealed their win with Reece Peitzsche’s insurance goal at 13:14. The game concluded 5-3, with Sea Dogs goaltender Justin Robinson awarded the third star for his impressive 32 saves.
With their record now at 15-24-3-3, the Sea Dogs look forward to their next challenge against the Victoriaville Tigres on Saturday night at 7 pm, aiming to replicate their last home victory against them.
This loss shifts the Sea Dogs record to 15-23-3-3 as they continue in their road trip, with their next challenge set for January 26th against the Shawinigan Cataractes at 8pm. Next home game for Saint John is set for February 15th where the “One for All Festival” kicks off with the annual Pride Night against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
