Six former Sea Dogs named to NHL opening night rosters
SAINT JOHN – Six former Saint John Sea Dogs players have been named to NHL opening night rosters ahead of the 2023-24 regular season, which gets underway tonight with three games on the schedule.
Boston Bruins: Charlie Coyle
The East Weymouth, Massachusetts is entering his 11th season in the National Hockey League, having spent the last four with the Bruins. Coyle, who was originally selected by the San Jose Sharks in the first round (No. 28) of the 2010 NHL Draft, has totaled 147 goals and 243 assists in 785 career NHL games to date.
Calgary Flames: Jonathan Huberdeau
Huberdeau, the highest NHL drafted player in Sea Dogs franchise history, returns for his second season with the Calgary Flames after posting 55 points in 79 games last season. Prior to the 2022-23 campaign the six-foot-one, 202-pound forward from Saint-Jerome, Quebec played 10 seasons for the Florida Panthers. The Sea Dogs Hall of Famer sits at 213 goals and 455 assists in 750 career NHL games.
Detroit Red Wings: Joe Veleno
A product of Montreal, Quebec, Veleno enters the 2023-24 season looking to solidify himself as an NHL regular after playing a career-high 81 games for the Red Wings last season. The 23-year-old has played a total of 152 games in the NHL since being drafted by Detroit in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft, registering 18 goals and 18 assists.
Ottawa Senators: Thomas Chabot, Mathieu Joseph
Teammates on the Sea Dogs 2017 President Cup championship team, Chabot and Joseph are back together for another season in Ottawa. Chabot was selected in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the Senators while Joseph was originally drafted by Tampa Bay and acquired by Ottawa during the 2021-22 season.
San Jose Sharks: Mike Hoffman
After being traded to the Sharks during the off-season, Hoffman enters his 11th NHL season looking to improve on his 34-point production from last season. The Kitchener, Ontario native has 218 goals and 264 assists in 679 games thus far in his NHL career.
