RECAP: Sea Dogs stumble against Eagles in return from Christmas break
SYDNEY, N.S. – The Saint John Sea Dogs return to action after their 12-day Christmas break proved challenging, as they fell 10-3 to the Cape Breton Eagles at Centre 200 on Thursday.
The game started with Eagles forward, and former Sea Dog, Cole Burbidge scoring at 1:26. The Sea Dogs responded later in the period with Brody Fournier netting his 14th goal of the year and first since being acquired by Saint John last week, at 16:21 with assists going to Kency Pierre-Noël and Mathis Gauthier. The first period ended tied 1-1, with the Sea Dogs leading in shots 12-10.
The Eagles took absolute control in the second period, starting with a powerplay goal by Charles-Antoine Lavallée at 4:43. Olivier Houde then scored a shorthanded goal at 6:44, followed by additional goals from Luke Patterson, Conor Shortall, and Émile Ricard, rapidly extending their lead to 6-1. Jude Campbell added another, bringing the score to 7-1 by the end of the period with the Eagles leading in shots, 30-18.
Sea Dogs opened the third period with a quick goal ten seconds in by Pierre-Noël, assisted by Fournier, making it 7-2. However, the Eagles shut down any chance of a comeback with Houde scoring again at 7:17 and Cam Squires at 8:57. Fournier scored his second of the game for the Sea Dogs on a powerplay at 15:27, assisted by Vince Élie and Pavel Simek, bringing the score to 9-3. Houde completed his hat-trick at 19:53, sealing the game at 10-3 for the Eagles. The final shots were 41-26 in favor of Cape Breton Eagles.
The Sea Dogs next challenge is on the road against the Moncton Wildcats this Saturday at 7pm. Their next home game is on New Year’s Eve at 2pm against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
