Mooseheads need overtime for fifth time in six games
2026-10-04
It’s almost becoming a given that the Mooseheads will end up in an overtime battle on a nightly basis after the team went to yet another extra period on Sunday in a 4-3 loss to the Sea Dogs in Saint John.
The Herd have now played six games in the QMJHL season and they have gone to OT in five of them. Unfortunately for the Mooseheads, they lost both of them this weekend in New Brunswick which included a 4-3 defeat in Moncton on Friday.
Mateo Nobert opened the scoring in front of 2,119 fans at TD Station on Sunday and Halifax got off to a solid start in the opening few minutes before things got rocky for the visitors later in the period. The Sea Dogs scored three times in four shots in less than two minutes on goalie Jack Fichthorn to turn the tables in a hurry. The first two of those goals were power play markers from Alexander Donovan and Alexis Joseph while first round Czech import pick Matyas Cancik notched the first of his career and it was a 3-1 advantage for Saint John.
As quick as the Dogs took the lead, the Moose were quick to rebound with a big goal to cut into the deficit. Rookie defenceman Duncan Anderson took a little drop feed from Quinn Kennedy and fired his shot from the circle to light the lamp for the first time in his QMJHL career.
Fichthorn put the shaky start behind him and came up with a great second period by stopping all 15 shots he faced in a scoreless period and it remained 3-2 Saint John going into the final 20 minutes of regulation. Neither side could mount much of an offensive attack in the third period but a tripping call on Bo Damphousse of the Sea Dogs was just what the Moose needed to set up Shawn Carrier for a blast to tie the game 3-3. It was the first of the season for Halifax’s 2025-26 goal scoring leader who got into action for the first time on Friday after suffering a minor lower-body injury at training camp with the Colorado Avalanche.

It was a near carbon copy result from Friday for the Mooseheads in the extra period which ended in the blink of an eye as forwards Oleg Kulebiakin and Nathan Langlois got caught up high in the defensive zone, leaving Owen Phillips to defend two Sea Dogs and Brandan Delarosbil finished off a crossing feed by Alexis Joseph just 30 seconds into overtime. Halifax fell just 16 seconds into OT on Friday.
Despite the losses, the Mooseheads salvaged a pair of points on the New Brunswick roadie and have picked up seven points through six games this season. They also weathered the storm of playing five-of-six games away from home to begin the schedule. Halifax will return to the friendly confines of Scotiabank Centre this week to begin a stretch of six consecutive home games when they host Rouyn-Noranda on Thursday at 7pm followed by Drummondville on Saturday night at 7pm.
Thursday’s game is the first Student Night of the season with all student tickets just $12 while Saturday is the second annual Country Night in Moose Country. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca.
