Career Years: Keith Getson
We continue our look at the individual efforts of the Islanders players through the 2016/17 campaign.
First off, we looked at Filip Chlapik. Now, we look at forward Keith Getson, who just finished his third season in the QMJHL, and as an Islander.
The Bridgewater, Nova Scotia native spent the first six games of the season watching from the stands as he served a six-game suspension stemming from a hit in the previous seasons playoffs.
He made his season debut on October 8th at Halifax. He would get his first point of the season in the next game, when he assisted on a Cody Donaghey goal in the 1st period of a 10-1 win over the Moncton Wildcats.
In the final game of October, Getson would get his first goal of the season against Bathurst.
November was his best month of the season. He had 4 goals and 9 points in 11 games.
Getson would consistently find himself on the scoresheet the rest of the way, missing just one game the rest of the season.
In the end, the 2016/17 season was by far Getson’s best yet:
- 2014/15 – 63GP, 1G, 9A, 10PTS
- 2015/16 – 61GP, 6G, 6A, 12PTS
- 2016/17 – 61GP, 17G, 17A, 34PTS
Getson was a +18 on the season and fired 104 shots through the regular season.
Getson spent much of the second half and into the playoffs centring the third line, with veteran Pascal Aquin and rookie Matthew Grouchy on his wings. The line would compete hard, making them a tough trio to play against every shift.
Before the start of the playoffs, Getson was happy with how the offensive aspect of his game had improved.
“It (the offensive part of his game) has definitely improved quite a bit. Playing with Pascal (Aquin) and (Matthew) Grouchy most of the year has been good and we’ve been a pretty good line just grinding down low to get that offense going.”
In the playoffs, Getson had 3 goals and 1 assist in 13 games.
Getson will return as a 19-year-old for his fourth season with the Islanders in 2017/18. With many of his teammates moving on, he should see increased ice time and will be relied on to find the back of the net more.
Islanders fans have watched the progress of Getson every game for the past three seasons. We all look forward to watching Keith grow even more in the future.
