Islanders look to salvage Quebec road trip in Chicoutimi
After a rough night in Baie-Comeau, the Charlottetown Islanders look to immediately rebound against a young Chicoutimi Sagueneens team in a matinee affair this afternoon at 5pm Atlantic.
This game is a tale of two teams heading in opposite directions. The Islanders have lost four straight games dating back to September 27th, while the Sagueneens have won 3 of their last 4 games, having not lost in regulation since September 22nd. They’re coming off of a tough overtime loss to the Halifax Mooseheads last night at home.
The Sagueneens boast a young, talented team with pro experience; five players on the roster were either drafted in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, signed to an NHL entry level contract, or were invited to an NHL training camp this season. The Sags are also home to Hendrix Lapierre, the 1st overall pick of the 2018 QMJHL Draft.
Justin Ducharme, an Anaheim Ducks training camp invitee, currently leads Chicoutimi in scoring, with six goals and nine points through six games. Lapierre and Montreal Canadiens prospect Samuel Houde follow closely behind with seven points.
In goal, Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Zachary Bouthillier and Alexis Shank have split the six games evenly down the middle, with Shank posting a sterling 1.35 goals against average and .951 save percentage in three games.
For the Islanders, Keith Getson, Kevin Gursoy, and Derek Gentile currently lead the team with five points apiece through seven games played.
Matthew Welsh and Dakota Lund-Cornish have also seen a relative split of Charlottetown’s seven games. Heading in to last night’s game against Baie-Comeau, Welsh was near the top of the league in most goaltending categories, however has fallen off a bit due to the volatile nature of those stats in the early season. Both netminders will look to prove that last night was just a blip on the radar.
