Getson leads Islanders to Game 1 victory
The Islanders kicked off their first round playoff series with the Quebec Remparts on Saturday night in Quebec City.
Charlottetown opened the scoring just under six minutes into the first period with Cayse Ton winning a race to a loose puck before setting up Sullivan Sparkes who fired a shot over shoulder of Remparts starter Antoine Samuel.
A familiar face would answer back for the Remparts before the end of the period, with former Islander Gregor MacLeod firing a shot past the blocker of Matthew Welsh to tie the game at 1-1.
Halfway through the second period, following a P.O. Joseph high-sticking call, Quebec defencemen Sam Dunn fired a shot through traffic beating Welsh low to the glove side to give the Remparts their first lead of the game.
The lead would be short lived though as just over two minutes later the Islanders took advantage of a power play chance of their own, with Keith Getson finishing off a play from Pascal Aquin and Taylor Egan, firing a wrist-shot past Samuel to tie the game.
The Islanders continued to roll in the third period with Getson picking up a pass from Cameron Askew in front of the Quebec net before beating Samuel for his second goal of the game.
Derek Gentile would add to the Isles lead minutes later, scoring in his first game back in Quebec following the mid-season trade that brought him to Charlottetown.
Sam King would also add a goal before Getson slid his third goal of the game into an open net to seal the win for the Islanders.
Following the win Islanders head coach and general manager Jim Hulton was happy to have an early lead in the series.
“We know they’re going to push because they don’t want to go in a hole heading back to our building and, vice-versa, we’re going to push because we’d like to have them wounded coming back to our building.”
Both teams square off again at the Videotron Centre tomorrow at 4PM AST with the Islanders now leading the series 1-0.
