Ask Every Islander: Goal Songs
Hockey and music go hand-in-hand. Whether it’s enhancing the in-game atmosphere, getting the players ready for the game, or celebrating a post-game victory, the effect music can have on a hockey game can’t be fully described.
Music is also a form of expression. You can tell a lot about a person by what they listen to; things like what makes them happy, what gets them fired up, and what helps them relax. Music helps you get a look at someone’s personality. To use music that enhances an atmosphere, but also pulls back the curtain on a team’s personality, a truly beautiful thing can be created.
In the spirit of Player’s Night on Friday, February 28th against the Cape Breton Eagles, we asked each Islander a simple question: If you could have any song played after you scored a goal, what song would it be? The answers varied across genres and reasons, but were entertaining regardless.
NOTE: I did my best to find clean versions of each song, but some profane language may still exist in each song. “AN” denotes the author’s dialogue in conversation.
Jacob Goobie: “Probably ‘Weekend’ by Mac Miller. It reminds me of the summer time; it’s a song you just vibe to, have fun, and relax to.”
Brendon Clavelle: “Oh boy… I don’t know. You know what? I’m gonna go with a wild card: There’s this song, I’m not even sure of the name. Camila Cabello sings it, it’s like a TikTok dance? I love the song, Welshy hates it.”
AN: “Is it ‘My Oh My’?”
“Yeah! I love it, and Welshy hates it, so I’m gonna go with that song!”
William Trudeau: “I don’t know the name of it… I think it’s ‘The Show Goes On’?”
Brett Budgell: “Oh jeez, I’m gonna have to think about this. Probably a Newfoundland song, something from back home. Probably ‘Heave Away’ for sure.”
Liam Peyton: “Maybe ‘Best Day Ever’ by Mac Miller. It’s just a happy song that makes me feel good.”
Justin Gill: “It would be ‘Butterfly Effect’ by Travis Scott, because it’s my favourite song. I love that song, so that’s what I’m choosing!”
Anthony Hamel: “‘Can’t Touch This’ by MC Hammer. Hammer is my nickname, and it would be a good song I think!”
Chris McQuaid: “‘You Make My Dreams Come True’. It’s a song I really like, and it puts everyone in a good mood.”
Lukas Cormier: “Oh I wasn’t expecting that kind of question. Maybe some kind of country song? Actually I might go with the Toronto Maple Leafs goal song, ‘You Make My Dreams Come True’.”
Keiran Gallant: “Oh that’s a good question! I honestly don’t even know. I’m trying to think of a good one”
AN: “It doesn’t have to be good, it can be ridiculous.”
“I honestly have no clue. Just put that as my answer.”
Nikita Alexandrov: “I’m picking the song ‘Kalinka’. It’s a Russian song that just brings a good mood to everything. It’s a funny song and that’s why I love it.”
Cedric Desruisseaux: “‘Armed and Dangerous’ by Juice WRLD. I love that singer, he’s a good rapper. I love the beat too, and the words “Armed and Dangerous”, when you score a goal you feel it.”
Patrick Leblanc: “I’d say ‘Don’t Stop the Party’ by Pitbull because it’s a good hype song and good party song.”
Drew Johnston: “I think it would have to be ‘La Grange’, by ZZ Top. I’m in to the old rock and roll, and I just love the way it vibes.”
Ethan Crossman: “‘Tik Tok’, by Kesha.”
Gaetan Jobin: “Definitely ‘Tik Tok’ by Kesha.”
Thomas Casey: “‘Ballin’ by Roddy Ricch and Mustard. I think it has a really good beat that gets the blood pumping.”
Zac Beauregard: “Probably some Nickelback! Something like ‘Animals’ or ‘Edge of a Revolution’.”
Drew Elliott: “My goal song would probably be ‘Party Up’ by DMX. It gets me going and I think the bench would get up too, hopefully leading to more good results in the game,”
Cole Edwards: “’50 Mission Cap’ by the Tragically Hip. It’s a little bit of history from Kingston, bringing my roots with me to Charlottetown.”
Max-Antoine Melancon: “I’d have to go with ‘Eye of the Tiger’ because I always watch Rocky movies and I love that song. It really gets me pumped up.”
Matthew Welsh: “Jeez that’s a tough one. I’d have to go with something a little upbeat, but at the same time I like some of the Drake stuff. I’d probably go with a Drake song, something like the new one on YouTube he has called ‘Big Mood’.”
Noah Laaouan: “I’d have to go with something by Imagine Dragons. I enjoy their songs a lot so that’s what I’d go with.”
Oscar Plandowski: “Probably ‘Knock Knock’ by Mac Miller. Just because it’s a good tune, it’d be a good one.”
