Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced for the second time this season that Martin Jones of the Calgary Hitmen is the CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending March 7. Jones carried a record of 4-0-0-0 with an incredible three shutouts posting a goals-against-average of 0.250 and save percentage of .992.
Jones’ three shutouts were earned in three straight games for the Hitmen and he was named first star of all three contests. He made 25 saves on Tuesday night in a 5-0 win over the Prince Albert Raiders, followed by 27 saves Thursday in a 2-0 win over the Swift Current Broncos, and finished his streak with 38 saves in a 6-0 win over the Kootenay Ice. His fourth win of the week and sixth straight victory was earned on Sunday before a National television audience on Rogers Sportsnet against the Saskatoon Blades with 27 saves in a 6-1 win.
Jones, a 20-year-old from North Vancouver, BC, is playing in his fourth WHL season. A member of Canada’s National Junior team, he leads the league with a goals-against-average of 2.24 and eight shutouts. He is also second in the league with 34 wins.
Mark Visentin of the OHL’s Niagara IceDogs helped improve his team’s playoff position with a 3-0-0-0 record and a goals-against-average of 1.30 and save percentage of .963. Also considered for the award was Shane Owen of the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats with two wins including a shutout victory and a goals-against-average of 1.44 and save percentage of .941.
