Greyhounds’ Matt Murray named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Matt Murray of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the playoff week ending March 30 after posting a 3-0-0-0 record with one shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.33 and save percentage of .957.
Murray backstopped the OHL’s West Division champion Greyhounds to a five-game series win over the seventh place Owen Sound Attack including three straight wins to close out the series last week. Playing on the road with the series tied 1-1, Murray made 35 saves last Monday in Game 3 as part of a 5-3 Greyhounds victory, then stopped all 24 shots he faced in Game 4 on Wednesday to earn first star honours in the 2-0 triumph. Back on home ice Friday, Murray had a 30-save performance as the Greyhounds defeated the Attack 6-1 to advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals where they will face the Erie Otters.
Murray, a 19-year-old from Thunder Bay, ON, is playing in his fourth career OHL season with the Greyhounds. Selected by the Penguins in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft, Murray finished the regular season ranked second in OHL wins with a record of 32-11-1-5 and tied for first in the league with six shutout victories. He also posted a goals-against-average of 2.57 and a save percentage of .921 that both ranked among the top five in the OHL.
Also considered for the award this week was Dallas Stars prospect Philippe Desrosiers who stopped all 38 shots he faced for the Rimouski Oceanic in parts of their final two games against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in QMJHL Playoff action, and Patrik Polivka who posted a 2-0 record with a 1.50 goals-against-average and a .945 save percentage for the Victoria Royals in their first round WHL Playoff series victory over the Spokane Chiefs.
