CHL Launches 2014-15 Movember Campaign
Wednesday October 29, 2014
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced the launch of the fourth season of a league-wide initiative with member clubs and players participating in Movember to help change the face of men’s health.
During the month of November, the Movember campaign challenges men to grow moustaches to spark conversation and raise vital funds and awareness to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.
“Over the past three years our players, teams, and on-ice officials have raised over $460,000 supporting this worthy cause,” said CHL President David Branch. “Cancer and mental health challenges affect most if not all of us, either directly or indirectly through friends and family, and it has been outstanding to see the energy and commitment of participants across the CHL for this event.”
Last season 39 teams consisting of 663 registered members raised over $157,000 and ranked 12th among all registered Canadian networks. The CHL helped contribute to the over $33 million raised by participants across Canada and the $105 million raised worldwide. The Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health and has raised $574 million to date and funded over 800 programs in 21 countries.
For the fourth straight year, CHL member clubs and players will be registered under the CHL platform on movember.com to raise proceeds by growing and grooming their moustache and encouraging donations through family, friends, fans, and other partners through a variety of unique in-arena and online promotions.
Each player on registered teams will be ranked and each team as a collective unit will be ranked throughout the CHL. Teams will be competing for the top spot in fundraising dollars and the winner will be presented with a special Movember trophy, claimed three straight times by the “MOfficials” consisting of 150 Western Hockey League officials who raised $63,962 and finished as the sixth ranked team in Canada last season. The Prince Albert Raiders led all CHL clubs in fundraising with $16,853 raised, while Michael Abbott of the Saint John Sea Dogs was the top individual leader with an impressive $5,705 raised.
