Canada defeats Czech Republic 6-2 Monday at U18
BRNO, Czech Republic – The challenge was issued. And Canada responded with an emotional 6-2 victory over host Czech Republic at the world under-18 hockey championship.
Brendan Gaunce (Belleville Bulls) led the way offensively with two goals and an assist as Canada bounced back from a 4-2 loss to Finland.
“It was a much better effort and much better game,” said Canadian coach Jesse Wallin. “The guys were challenged. Our last game against Finland was nowhere near the way we need to play and we really went after the boys hard to buy in. It was a make-or-break game, it was a must-win, it was a Game 7. They had to step up and rise to the occasion.”
Scott Laughton (Oshawa Generals), Sam Reinhart (Kootenay Ice), Matthew Dumba (Red Deer Rebels) and Kerby Rychel (Windsor Spitfires) also scored while Matt Murray (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) made 23 saves for Canada (2-1), which is assured of at least a spot it in the quarter-finals.
