Canada beat Sweden 7-3 in NJT Exhibition
Canada’s National Junior Team beat Sweden 7-3 Thursday afternoon in the second of three exhibition games as part of Hockey Canada’s Summer Development Camp in Lake Placid, New York.
Canada beat Finland 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon and will play the United States on Saturday afternoon to complete the exhibition series.
Kerby Rychel (Windsor Spitfires) led the way for Canada with a pair of second period goals. Brendan Gaunce (Belleville Bulls) finished the game with a pair of assists, while defenceman Matt Finn (Guelph Storm) who opened the scoring for Canada in the first period, also finished the contest with two points.
Leading 1-0 after one period, Connor McDavid (Erie Otters) put Canada ahead 2-0 before Rychel made it 3-0 just 15 seconds later, then added his second goal of the game another 37 seconds later.
Sweden cut the lead to 4-3 before Canada scored three unanswered goals in the third period from Frederik Gauthier (Rimouski Oceanic) who tallied for the second straight game, followed by singles from Sean Monahan (Ottawa 67’s), and Bo Horvat (London Knights).
Curtis Lazar (Edmonton Oil Kings), Max Domi (London Knights), Ryan Pulock (Brandon Wheat Kings), Ryan Rupert (London Knights), Slater Koekkoek (Windsor Spitfires), and Anthony Mantha (Val-d’Or Foreurs) all picked up assists.
Zachary Fucale (Halifax Mooseheads) made 38 saves in the victory.
The Summer Development Camp includes players eligible for the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship.
A total of 35 CHL players are attending the camp.
Adam Erne (Quebec Remparts) also helped lead Team USA to a 4-3 shootout win over Team Finland in Lake Placid in exhibition action. He scored a goal and an assist in regulation time, then netted the shootout winner. Connor Carrick (Plymouth Whalers) picked up an assist, while Anthony Stolarz (London Knights) made 34 saves in the win.
