World Under-17 Hockey Challenge – Quarterfinal Recap
Quarterfinal action was underway Thursday at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge:
Russia 8 vs. Canada Black 4
Canada Black has fallen in defeat following a hard-battled contest with Team Russia at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
After coming away with a 3-0 record to start the tournament, Canada Black fell short in quarterfinal action, surrendering two first-period goals to Team Russia before then trailing by five midway through the middle frame.
The squad then rallied with a pair of goals from Calgary Hitmen forward Sean Tschigerl and Flint Firebirds forward Brennan Othmann before its comeback bid would ultimately fall short. Russia would then go on to score another three goals, outpacing the two-goal effort from Canada Black forward Jayden Grubbe of the Red Deer Rebels.
Canada Black will face Finland in the seventh place game set for Saturday.
Canada White 3 vs. Canada Red 2 (OT)
The Great White North was guaranteed a winner in Thursday’s quarterfinal showdown between Canada White and Canada Red.
The thrilling contest ultimately required overtime, with Canada White prevailing in the extra frame on a tally provided by Sudbury Wolves forward Chase Stillman, who cashed in at the 9:31 mark. Also chipping in offensively for Canada White on Thursday were forwards Dylan Guenther of the Edmonton Oil Kings as well as Connor Lockhart of the Erie Otters, while leading the charge for Canada Red was Acadia-Bathurst Titan forward Riley Kidney and Shawinigan Cataractes prospect Dovar Tinling. Between the pipes, Tyler Brennan of the Prince George Cougars turned aside 25 shots to secure the victory for his side.
Canada White now advances to Friday’s semifinal against the United States, while Canada Red will play for fifth place against Sweden on Saturday.
