WJC 2019 Day 3 Recap
The United States and Russia came out on top with victories on a lighter day in the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Here’s a look at Friday’s Day 3 action.
UNITED STATES 8, KAZAKHSTAN 2
San Jose Sharks prospect Sasha Chmelevski (Ottawa 67’s) found the back of the net and Dallas Stars second round pick Jason Robertson (Niagara IceDogs) picked up four assists as the United States blitzed Kazakhstan 8-2 in Victoria.
The Americans outshot the Kazakhs 66-13 as Joel Farabee netted a natural hat-trick and Ryan Poehling had a goal and two assists. The two clubs were tied at one in the first period before the Americans proceeded to score seven consecutive goals.
The U.S. improves to 2-0 in the tournament while Kazakhstan falls to 0-0-0-2.
RUSSIA 2, CZECH REPUBLIC 1
Artyom Galimov and Nikolai Kovalenko were goal-scorers as Russia narrowly defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 behind a 24-save effort from Pyotr Kochetkov.
The Russians improve to 2-0, outshooting the Czechs 28-25 as blueliner Alexander Alexeyev (Red Deer Rebels) collected an assist.
Jachym Kondelik scored the lone Czech goal while netminder Lukas Dostal turned aside 26 shots. The Czechs now sit at 0-1-0-1.
