28 CHL Graduates Earn Medals at 2018 Olympic Winter Games
A total of 28 CHL graduates will return home from the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea with medals as men’s hockey action wrapped up on Saturday.
A trio of former Russian CHL players in Mikhail Grigorenko (Quebec Remparts), Ivan Telegin (Barrie Colts) and Sergei Mozyakin (Val-d’Or Foreurs) won gold in a 4-3 overtime win over Germany as Minnesota Wild prospect Kirill Kaprizov scored the golden goal.
The Olympic Athletes from Russia finished with a 5-1 record, featuring three of the tournament’s four top scorers.
Nine German CHL graduates will return home with silver medals following a heartbreaking loss. Germany accessed the Gold Medal Game through a 4-3 semi-final win over Canada on Friday.
Canada prevailed over the Czech Republic by a score of 6-4 to claim Olympic Bronze. Team Canada captain Chris Kelly (Sudbury Wolves) scored a pair of goals in the Bronze Medal Game while other CHL grads in Brandon Kozun (Calgary Hitmen) and Rob Klinkhammer (Brandon Wheat Kings) had a pair of assists.
Canada’s Maxim Noreau (Victoriaville Tigres) led all defencemen in scoring with seven points (2-5–7) and was named to the tournament’s Media All-Star Team on the back end. He finished tied for Canada’s scoring lead with teammate Derek Roy (Kitchener Rangers) (2-5–7).
Canada finishes on the podium in a third straight Olympic Winter Games, bringing home Bronze for the third time in event history.
