2014 WU17 – Day 5 Results
The 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge includes 75 players from the CHL competing in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Here’s a recap of Thursday’s action:
Pacific 3 vs. Sweden 1
Team Pacific won their third straight game of the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Sweden on Thursday night.
The win puts Team Pacific (3-1-0-0) in first place in the Group A standings, and Sweden (1-1-1-1) in third.
After falling behind 1-0, Pacific got on the board at 5:05 of the first period on a goal by Brad Morrison (Prince George Cougars) who finished the game with two points.
Adam Musil (Red Deer Rebels) also finished with two points including the game-winning goal 26 seconds into the third period.
Glenn Gawdin (Swift Current Broncos) scored the insurance marker, and Jansen Harkins (Prince George Cougars) finished with two assists.
Zach Sawchenko (Moose Jaw Warriors) made 25 saves in goal for the win.
Team Pacific will play Russia in the Semi-Finals on Friday night.
United States 6 vs. Ontario 2
With a chance to qualify for the Semi-Finals with a win, Team Ontario suffered a disappointing loss to the United States by a 6-2 score.
The loss gives Ontario a 2-1-0-1 record good for third place in the Group B standings.
Dylan Strome (Erie Otters) scored the game’s opening goal at 13:54 to give Ontario the 1-0 lead.
Trailing 2-1, Brett McKenzie (North Bay Battalion) tied the game at 1:33 of the third period.
The United States then scored four unanswered goals while outshooting Ontario 54-24 in the contest and finish first in Group B with a 4-0-0-0 record.
Ontario will play Sweden on Friday afternoon in the fifth place matchup.
Quebec 4 vs. West 1
Team Quebec picked up their second win of the tournament with a 4-1 win over Team West to keep their medal hopes alive.
The win gives Quebec (2-1-0-1) a second place finish in Group A while Team West (0-3-1-0) finishes in fifth place.
Nicolas Roy (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) scored a goal and two assists to lead the Quebec offense.
Brandon Gignac (Shawinigan Cataractes) opened the scoring at 1:29 of the first period and David Henley (Val-d’Or Foreurs) netted the game-winner at 17:41 with Roy picking up assists on both goals.
Cameron Hebig (Saskatoon Blades) scored the lone goal for Team West assisted by Ethan Bear (Seattle Thunderbirds) and Jesse Gabrielle (Brandon Wheat Kings).
Quebec will face the United States Friday night in the Semi-Finals, while Team West will play Germany for ninth place.
Russia 5 vs. Atlantic 3
The host Team Atlantic suffered their third loss of the preliminary round by a 5-3 score to Russia.
The loss puts Atlantic (1-3-0-0) in fourth place in the Group B standings, while Russia (2-1-1-0) finishes in second place.
William Bower (Moncton Wildcats) opened the scoring for Team Atlantic just 2:10 into the game.
Russia stormed back with four unanswered goals including two in the first period and two more in the middle frame.
Nathan Noel (Saint John Sea Dogs) picked up an assist on Atlantic’s third goal.
Team Atlantic will play the Czech Republic for seventh place on Friday evening.
