2014 WU17 – Day 4 Results
The 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge includes 75 players from the CHL competing in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Here’s a recap of Wednesday’s action:
Pacific 4 vs. Czech Republic 1
Team Pacific picked up their second win of the tournament with a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic to move into a first place tie in the Group A standings.
Tyler Soy (Victoria Royals) led the charge with a goal and an assist for Team Pacific.
Ty Ronning (Vancouver Giants) opened the scoring before Giorgio Estephan (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Glenn Gawdin (Swift Current Broncos) scored second period goals.
Zach Sawchenko (Moose Jaw Warriors) made 29 saves in goal for the win.
Team Pacific (2-1-0-0) faces Sweden on Thursday night with the winner advancing to Friday’s Semi-Finals.
Russia 6 vs. Ontario 5 SO
Team Ontario battled back from a 4-1 deficit and scored four goals in the third period but fell to Russia 6-5 in a shootout Wednesday night in Sydney.
Mitchell Marner (London Knights) recorded his second hat-trick of the preliminary round to lead the Ontario attack.
Dylan Strome (Erie Otters) scored a goal and an assist, while Graham Knott (Niagara IceDogs) picked up two assists.
Ontario (2-0-0-1) faces the first place United States on Thursday night.
West 3 vs. Sweden 2 SO
Team West scored a thrilling shootout victory to pick up their first win at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge over the previously unbeaten Sweden.
Troy Murray (Kootenay Ice) was the hero for Team West scoring the shootout winner.
Keegan Kolesar (Seattle Thunderbirds) scored once and Terrell Draude (Calgary Hitmen) had one assist for the West who led 2-0 early in the third.
Team West (0-2-1-0) will wrap up preliminary play against Quebec (1-1-0-1) on Thursday afternoon.
Atlantic 4 vs. Germany 3
Team Atlantic picked up their first win of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge ringing in the New Year with a 4-3 win over Germany.
Nathan Noel (Saint John Sea Dogs) was among the offensive leaders for Team Atlantic with a goal and one assist.
Luc Deschenes (Charlottetown Islanders) picked up one assist.
Atlantic (1-2-0-0) wraps up its preliminary round against Russia back in Sydney on Thursday afternoon.
In other Preliminary Round action on Tuesday, Russia (1-1-0-0) defeated Germany (0-3-0-0) by a 7-2 score.
