2014 WU17 – Day 2 Results
The 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge includes 75 players from the CHL competing in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Here’s a recap of Monday’s action:
Pacific 6 vs. West 3
Team Pacific picked up their first win of the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 6-3 win over Team West playing in their first game of the tournament.
Matteo Gennaro (Prince Albert Raiders) led the Pacific attack with two goals and one assist.
Giorgio Estephan (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Tyler Soy (Victoria Royals) each chipped in a goal and an assist.
Tyler Benson (Vancouver Giants) scored the game-winner late in the third period with Brad Morrison (Prince George Cougars) scoring the other Pacific goal.
Zach Sawchenko (Moose Jaw Warriors) made 25 saves in the win.
Team West (0-1) will face the Czech Republic (1-1) on Tuesday, while the Pacific (1-1) returns to action Wednesday against the Czechs.
Ontario 5 vs. Atlantic 1
Team Ontario improved to 2-0 at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 5-1 win over Team Atlantic who played their first game of the event.
Graham Knott (Niagara IceDogs) scored a pair of goals and Dylan Strome (Erie Otters) scored once with an assist to lead Ontario.
Travis Konecny (Ottawa 67’s) and Hayden McCool (Niagara IceDogs) each scored third period goals.
Nicholas Welsh (Shawinigan Cataractes) scored the lone goal for Team Atlantic.
Troy Timpano (Sudbury Wolves) made 22 saves to earn the win in goal.
Team Atlantic (0-1) will face the United States (2-0) on Tuesday, with Ontario (2-0) playing their next game Wednesday against Russia (0-1).
Czech Republic 5 vs. Quebec 1
The Czech Republic scored four third period goals to break a 1-1 tie and cruise to a 5-1 win over Team Quebec who suffered their first loss of the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge following a thrilling win over Team Pacific on Sunday.
Anthony Beauvillier (Shawinigan Cataractes) opened the scoring for Team Quebec just 1:16 into the contest with Nicholas Meloche (Baie-Comeau Drakkar) picking up the assist.
Callum Booth (Quebec Remparts) made 32 saves despite the loss.
Quebec (1-1) will face Sweden (1-0) on Tuesday night.
In other Preliminary Round action on Monday, the United States beat Germany 14-1 to improve their record to 2-0.
