2014 IIHF WJC – Final Results
The 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship included 55 current CHL players and five graduates competing in Malmo, Sweden. Here is a recap of Sunday’s final games:
Finland 3 vs. Sweden 2 OT
Team Finland scored a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory over the host Team Sweden to capture gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
Three CHL players won gold with Finland including 2014 NHL Draft prospect Julius Honka (Swift Current Broncos), Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Henri Ikonen (Kingston Frontenacs), and Nashville Predators prospect Mikko Vainonen (Kingston Frontenacs) who picked up an assist in the victory.
Three CHL players earned silver with Sweden including Washington Capitals prospect Andre Burakovsky (Erie Otters), Anaheim Ducks prospect Nick Sorensen (Quebec Remparts), and goaltender Oscar Dansk (Erie Otters) who made 28 saves despite the loss.
The gold medal is Finland’s first since 1998, while Sweden earns silver for the second straight year.
Russia 2 vs. Canada 1
Canada’s National Junior Team finished fourth at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship, falling to Russia 2-1 in Sunday’s bronze medal game at Malmö Arena.
Josh Morrissey (Prince Albert Raiders) scored the lone goal for the Canadians, pulling Canada to within one seven minutes into the third period.
Former Quebec Rempart Mikhail Grigorenko scored Russia’s first goal.
Zachary Fucale (Halifax Mooseheads) made 30 saves in the Canadian net.
Aaron Ekblad (Barrie Colts) was named Canada’s Best Player.
Three CHL players won bronze with Russia including 2014 NHL Draft prospect Ivan Barbashev (Moncton Wildcats), Buffalo Sabres prospect Nikita Zadorov (London Knights), and Los Angeles Kings prospect Valentin Zykov (Baie-Comeau Drakkar).
Canada has medalled at 14 of the last 16 IIHF World Junior Championships, including gold medal performances in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, silver medals in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, and bronze medals in 2000, 2001 and 2012.

Germany 3 vs. Norway 1
Germany scored a 3-1 victory over Norway to secure a berth in the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Dominik Kahun (Sudbury Wolves) scored the game-winner for Germany.
Leon Draisaitl (Prince Albert Raiders) recorded two assists and was named Germany’s Best Player.
Marvin Cupper (Shawinigan Cataractes) made 34 saves in the win.
Following the game, Germany’s Top three players of the tournament were named as selected by the coaches and included Kahun, along with Markus Eisenschmid (Medicine Hat Tigers).
2014 IIHF World Junior Championship Awards:
At the conclusion of the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship the Tournament All-Stars were named as selected by the media along with the Best Players as selected by the Directorate.
Canadian forward Anthony Mantha (Val-d’Or Foreurs) was named an All-Star after scoring five goals and six assists for 11 points in seven games. Defenceman Nikita Zadorov (London Knights) was also named an All-Star.
Oscar Dansk (Erie Otters) was named the tournament’s Best Goaltender by the Directorate.
The 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Toronto and Montreal. Canada will play in a group that includes Finland, the United States, Slovakia, and Germany based in Montreal. Sweden, Russia, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Denmark will make up the other group based in Toronto.
