2012 WU17 Day 5 Results
ONT 6 vs. QUE 2
WINDSOR, Ont. – Hunter Garlent (Guelph Storm) scored twice to pace the offence as Ontario wrapped up an undefeated preliminary round at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 6-2 victory over Quebec on Monday night.
The winners of Group A, Ontario (4-0) will take on Russia in Tuesday’s late semifinal at the WFCU Centre (7 p.m. ET), while Quebec (2-2) will travel to LaSalle to meet Pacific in the fifth-place game (7 p.m. ET).
Mitchell Dempsey (Plymouth Whalers), Chris Bigras (Owen Sound Attack), Bo Horvat (London Knights) and Stephen Harper (Erie Otters) had the other goals for Ontario, which finished the preliminary round as the only team in the tournament without a loss. Brent Pedersen (Kitchener Rangers) added two assists and 10 different players recorded at least one point as Ontario moved into the final four for the fifth straight U17 tournament, having played for gold in each of the past four.
Alexandre Ranger (Baie-Comeau Drakkar) and Yan-Pavel Laplante (P.E.I. Rocket) scored for Quebec, which needed at least a four-goal victory to have any chance at playing for a medal. Laplante’s goal was his fourth in as many games; he was the only player in the tournament to score in all four of his team’s preliminary round games.
SWE 8 vs. ATL 2
WINDSOR, Ont. – Robert Hägg and André Burakowsky finished with two goals and an assist each as Sweden capped its preliminary round at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with an 8-2 win over Atlantic on Monday afternoon.
Matt Murphy (Val-d’Or Foreurs) was the only CHL player who scored for Atlantic.
Sweden will face Team USA in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, while Atlantic will travel to Tecumseh to meet the Czech Republic in the seventh-place game (7 p.m. ET).
RUS 6 vs. WST 3
LASALLE, Ont. – Valeri Nichushkin, Yevgeni Zakurin and Sergei Tolchinski scored in the third period as Russia locked up a semifinal spot at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 6-3 win over West on Monday night.
The win, coupled with the United States’ victory over Pacific, means Russia (3-1) finishes second in Group B and will face the defending gold medallists from Ontario in Tuesday’s late semifinal in Windsor (7 p.m. ET).
Cory Millette (Red Deer Rebels) and Jordan Tkatch (Prince George Cougars) were among the goal scorers for West (0-4), which knew it could finish no higher than fifth in Group B but could have spoiled Russia’s semifinal chances with a victory. It is the first Canadian team to go winless in the preliminary round since Quebec went 0-4 in 2005 in Lethbridge, Alta.
West will conclude its tournament Tuesday when it takes on Germany in LaSalle in the ninth-place game (2 p.m. ET).
USA 4 vs. PAC 2
TECUMSEH, Ont. – Evan Allen and Hudson Fasching scored two goals apiece as the United States grabbed a semifinal berth at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge thanks to a 4-2 win over Pacific on Monday night.
While the U.S. victory sends the Americans to a Tuesday semifinal date with Sweden in Windsor (7 p.m. ET), it sends Pacific crashing from first in Group A at the start of the day to out of the gold medal mix; the Canadian side will face Quebec for fifth place Tuesday night in LaSalle (7 p.m. ET).
Torrin White (Moose Jaw Warriors) and Morgan Klimchuk (Regina Pats) scored the goals for Pacific, which needed a win, an overtime loss or a one-goal loss in regulation in order to qualify for the semifinals. Klimchuk’s goal with 26 seconds remaining gave the Canadians a chance, but it instead will play for fifth for the second time in three years.
