Los Angeles, CA – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 107 CHL players were selected in the seven rounds of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft representing 51% of all 210 drafted players.
r
The 51% represents the second time since 1998 that the CHL has produced more than half of all talent selected by the NHL. 52% of all players drafted in 2008 were from the CHL.
r
The Western Hockey League leads the way with 43 players selected, followed by 42 selected from the Ontario Hockey League, and 22 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
r
The WHL’s Portland Winterhawks produced an impressive eight players in the draft including two players in the first round. The Memorial Cup Champion Windsor Spitfires along with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s and Owen Sound Attack each produced four players, while the Gatineau Olympiques and Halifax Mooseheads each led the QMJHL with three players selected.
All 40 players that competed in the 2010 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game were also selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
r
All 30 NHL teams selected at least one CHL player with the Buffalo Sabres selecting a league-leading eight out of their nine players from the CHL. The Edmonton Oilers selected the most players from the CHL out of any Canadian team with seven players including first overall pick Taylor Hall.
Canada was the top country represented in the draft with 99 players followed by 59 from the United States.
Last season, 99 CHL players were taken in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft led by 45 OHL players, followed by 31 from the WHL, and 23 from the QMJHL.
