2014 CHL Import Draft takes place Wednesday July 2

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced details for the 23rd annual CHL Import Draft which takes place on Wednesday July 2, 2014, beginning at 11:00 am Eastern.
The two-round draft will take place online with the order of selection rotating through each of the CHL’s three leagues using an inverse order of final regular season standings within each league from the 2013-14 season. The OHL’s Sarnia Sting hold the number one pick, followed by the Quebec Remparts who acquired the second overall selection following a 2012 trade with the Sherbrooke Phoenix. The WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes will select third overall. Each team in the CHL is permitted to dress and play a maximum of two import players each season who are selected annually through the CHL Import Draft.

A total of 12 players acquired through the CHL Import Draft were recently selected in the 2014 NHL Draft including first round picks Leon Draisaitl of the Prince Albert Raiders chosen third overall by the Edmonton Oilers, CHL Rookie of the Year Nikolaj Ehlers of the Halifax Mooseheads chosen ninth overall by the Winnipeg Jets, defenceman Julius Honka of the Swift Current Broncos selected 14th overall by the Dallas Stars, Nikita Scherbak of the Saskatoon Blades chosen 26th overall by the Montreal Canadiens, and Nikolay Goldobin of the Sarnia Sting chosen 27th overall by the San Jose Sharks.
Last season a total of 78 players were selected from 12 different countries led by 22 players from Russia and consisting of a total of 52 forwards, 25 defencemen, and one goaltender. The Vancouver Giants used the first overall pick to select Russian defenceman Dmitry Osipov.
