Brandon, MB — Brandon Wheat Kings’ general manager Kelly McCrimmon has completed his second major Western Hockey League trade of the day, announcing the acquisition of overage left-winger Darian Dziurzynski from the Saskatoon Blades Sunday night.
In order to obtain the 20-year old Lloydminster product, who scored a career high 35 goals and 57 points in 72 games for the Eastern Division pennant winning Blades last season, the Wheat Kings sent two second round bantam picks (2012 and 2013) as well as a third round selection in 2014.
In Dziurzynksi, the Wheat Kings are getting one of the WHL’s premier power forwards, who was chosen by the Phoenix Coyotes in the fifth round (141st overall) of the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
“The Wheat Kings are excited to add Darian to our lineup,” says McCrimmon. “Over his time in Saskatoon, he has developed into a premier player in our league. With the rivalry that we’ve had with the Blades over the past few years, we have a healthy respect for how hard he plays the game.”
In giving up three WHL bantam picks to get him, McCrimmon added “while we recognize the price is high, we feel that this is a great addition to our club.”
In four games with the Blades this season, the 6’1″ 205 lb forward has three goals and two minor penalties. The acquisition of Dziurzynski gives the Wheat Kings the league limit of three 20-year olds on their roster. The others are veteran center Paul Ciarelli and defenceman Brodie Melnychuk.
Brandon hopes to have the former Blade in the lineup Tuesday night when the Wheat Kings play game four of their current 7-game western road swing in Seattle against the Thunderbirds.
