WHL Tonight: Raiders down Rebels in shootout for record 50th victory

1. Carl Tetachuk, Lethbridge Hurricanes: Lethbridge Hurricanes goaltender Carl Tetachuk recorded the second shutout of his WHL career Friday, stopping all 35 shots sent his way in a 5-0 win against the Moose Jaw Warriors. Tetachuk stopped 13 shots in the first, 14 in the second, and eight in the third.
The WHL Rookie of the Month for February, Tetachuk is 19-9-1-1 in 32 games this season. The Lethbridge, Alta. product also has a 2.99 goals-against-average, 0.905 save percentage, and two shutouts.
2. Bailey Brkin, Spokane Chiefs: Spokane Chiefs goaltender Bailey Brkin recorded a career-high 50 saves for the second time in his WHL playing days Friday in a 5-2 win against the Portland Winterhawks. Brkin stopped 18 shots in the first, 13 in the second, and 19 in the third for the victory. Brkin’s previous 50-save game also came against the Winterhawks, but when he was a member of the Kootenay ICE last season.
The Sherwood Park, Alta. product has a 23-10-1-2 record, 2.83 GAA, 0.913 SV%, and two shutouts this season. For his 71-game WHL career, Brkin has a 34-25-3-2 record, 3.42 GAA, 0.898 SV%, and three shutouts.
3. Beck Warm, Tri-City Americans: Tri-City Americans goaltender Beck Warm recorded a career-high 60 saves Friday in a 2-1 loss to the Everett Silvertips. Warm stopped 22 shots in the first, 23 in the second, and 15 in the third.
The Whistler, B.C. product is 31-22-2-0 in 56 games this season with a 2.85 GAA, 0.919 SV%, and one shutout. For his 102-game WHL career, Warm is 50-39-3-1 with a 3.18 GAA, 0.907 SV%, and two shutouts.

Lethbridge Hurricanes 5 at Moose Jaw Warriors 0
After being named the WHL’s Rookie of the Month, Carl Tetachuk of the Lethbridge Hurricanes picked up his second career WHL shutout after stopping 35 shots from the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Hot-streak player Jake Elmer struck first for the Hurricanes with slick hands and a quick top-shelf shot in the first period to extend his goal-scoring streak to a career-high 11-games. Jake Leschyshyn (Vegas Golden Knights), Jackson Shepard, Nick Henry (Colorado Avalanche) and 2019 NHL Draft prospect Dylan Cozens were able to add four more goals in the second and third period to bring Lethbridge’s final total to 5-0.
Red Deer Rebels 1 at Prince Albert Raiders 2 (SO)
2019 NHL Draft prospect Brett Leason scored the third of three-straight shootout goals Friday as the Prince Albert Raiders earned a 2-1 victory over the visiting Red Deer Rebels.
With plenty of talent on both sides, Ian Scott (Toronto Maple Leafs) and 2019 NHL Draft prospect Ethan Anders stole the show. Each stopped all 20 shots sent their way through the first 40 minutes. In the third, the Raiders upped their game with 18 shots, getting a one-time goal from Noah Gregor (San Jose Sharks). The Rebels would have a response from their overage offensive star though as Brandon Hagel (Chicago Blackhawks) responded less than five minutes later.
After overtime solved nothing, the trio of Gregor, Dante Hannoun, and Leason scored on their shootout attempts. Cameron Hausinger scored on his attempt, but a miss from Hagel put the Raiders ahead in the extra session before Leason clinched the victory.
Regina Pats 0 at Saskatoon Blades 4
Saskatoon Blades’ goaltender Nolan Maier recorded his fifth career WHL shutout against the Regina Pats after stopping 19 shots.
Setting the tone early in the game, Eric Florchuk (Washington Capitals) scored a short-handed breakaway goal in the first two minutes of the game. Adding another three goals from Max Gerlach, Ryan Hughes and Kyle Crnkovic, the Blades continued to dominate in the first and second period. With a scoreless third period, the Blades beat the Pats 4-0 and continue to seek a second-place position in Eastern Conference.
Brandon Wheat Kings 2 at Calgary Hitmen 3 (OT)
Riley Stotts (Toronto Maple Leafs) scored his 19th goal of the season 2:09 into overtime Friday, sending the Calgary Hitmen to a 3-2 overtime victory against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
James Malm opened the scoring with his 28th of the season 3:48 into the second period, but the Wheat Kings responded with goals from Connor Gutenberg and Caiden Daley to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes. In the third Hitmen captain, Mark Kastelic tied up the game as the 2019 NHL Draft prospect buried his 44th goal of the season.
In extra time, Luke Coleman stick-handled his way past Wheat Kings’ goaltender Jiri Patera (Vegas Golden Knights) down low, feeding it into the crease where Stotts banged it home to send Calgary to victory.
Jack McNaughton stopped 19 of 21 shots to pick up the win. Patera stopped 39 of 42 in the one-goal loss.
Swift Current Broncos 3 at Kootenay ICE 5
The Kootenay ICE pulled off a 5-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos extending their season series record to 4-0-0-0.
Kootenay’s Brandon Machado and Swift Current’s Matthew Culling exchanged goals in the first period, but then the ICE ran away with a scoring streak. Jaeger White, Brad Ginnell and Connor McClennon contributed to the four-goal tally for the ICE. Storming back in the third period, Swift Current’s Carter Chorney and Eric Houk to close the gap in the score.
After the Broncos pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, it gave Kootenay’s McClennon the opportunity to score on the empty net and finish the game 5-3.
2019 NHL Draft prospect Jesse Makaj stopped 24 of 27 shots for the ICE victory.
Medicine Hat Tigers 2 at Edmonton Oil Kings 4
Vince Loschiavo reached the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his WHL career Friday night, notching the game-winning goal as part of a 4-2 win against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Captain Trey-Fix-Wolansky (Columbus Blue Jackets) added a pair of goals including an empty-net goal to retain the team lead in goals while Dylan Myskiw stopped 31 shots in the win.
2019 NHL Draft prospect Matthew Robertson opened the scoring on a weird goal, shooting the puck off the backboards and into the crease where it deflected off of Mads Sogaard and into the net.
Another 2019 NHL Draft prospect in Ryan Chyzowski would tie up the game midway through the second. Corson Hopwo collected the puck in front of the net off an initial chance and dished it to an open Chyzowski at the side of the net, who buried the puck to tie up the game.
Fix-Wolansky would put his team back in front shortly later though, spinning and firing from the slot to make it 2-1. Loschiavo would ensure the win for the Oil Kings minutes later, taking a drop pass from Carter Souch to make it 3-1.
Hayden Ostir cut the deficit to one in the third, but Fix-Wolansky’s empty-net goal closed out the victory in style.
Seattle Thunderbirds 6 at Kamloops Blazers 4
It was a tight game between the Seattle Thunderbirds and Kamloops Blazers resulting in a 6-4 win for the American team.
Matthew Wedman scored twice along with Noah Philp and Andrej Kukuca for the Thunderbirds and held at a 4-4 score with the Blazers. For Kamloops, it was Kobe Mohr, Josh Pillar, Orrin Centazzo and Connor Zary that always battled back from behind to tie the game.
But, after two quick goals from 2019 NHL Draft prospect Henrik Rybinski and Nolan Volcan in the third period, the Thunderbirds emerged victorious after the tight game.
Rookie goaltender Roddy Ross picked up his 12th win of the season after stopping 42 of 46 shots.
Kelowna Rockets 4 at Vancouver Giants 7
In a high-scoring game, the Vancouver Giants pulled out a 7-4 win over the Kelowna Rockets after alternating goals for the first half.
2019 NHL Draft prospects Alex Swetlikoff and Nolan Foote, who scored twice, along with Mark Liwiski all notched one for the Rockets. Scoring his first career WHL goal Nicholas Draffin as well as Dallas Hines and Alex Kannok (Washington Capitals) alternated goal scoring with Kelowna until half-way through the second period.
Picking up momentum, Jadon Joseph, Milos Roman (Calgary Flames), Davis Koch and Tristen Nielsen kicked the Giants’ game into high gear scoring the final four goals of the game for Vancouver.
David Tendeck (Arizona Coyotes) collected the win for Vancouver after stopping 35 shots.
Prince George Cougars 3 at Victoria Royals 4
Controlling the majority of the play in the game, the Victoria Royals beat the Prince George Cougars in a 4-3 win.
Kody McDonald, Phillip Schultz and Tarun Fizer opened the scoring in the first period to take the lead for Victoria with the Cougars single response coming from Josh Maser. Scoring his second of the night McDonald extended the Royals lead to four.
In the third, the Cougars put on a valiant effort shown with goals from Matej Toman and Reid Perepeluk to battle back in the game with a score of 4-3, but ultimately ran out of time and lost, unable to catch the Royals.
Showing some impressive save, Victoria’s Griffen Outhouse stood strong in net stopping 32 of 35 shots.
Tri-City Americans 1 at Everett Silvertips 2
Beck Warm dazzled with career-high 60 saves, but the Everett Silvertips still found a way to win Friday, earning a 2-1 victory in the dying seconds of regulation.
Warm shutout the Silvertips through 40 minutes with 45 saves while a first-period goal from Nolan Yaremko served as the only offence from either side.
That would change in the third though as Zack Andrusiak tied the game up with 10:20 left in regulation and Bryce Kindopp banged home a puck in front of the net with 49 seconds to go. The Silvertips set a franchise record for shots in a game with 62.
2019 NHL Draft prospect Dustin Wolf stopped 21 of 22 shots to earn the win, earning his 38th victory of the season and setting a new franchise record.
Spokane Chiefs 5 at Portland Winterhawks 2
A 50-save performance from Bailey Brkin and three-point games from Riley Woods and Filip Kral (Toronto Maple Leafs) guided the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-2 win Friday against the Portland Winterhawks.
Brkin stopped 18 shots in the first, 13 in the second, and 19 in the third. By the time the Winterhawks had been able to score on Brkin, the Chiefs already had a 4-0 lead.
Jake McGrew (San Jose Sharks) scored in the first, while Woods and 2019 NHL Draft prospect Luke Toporowski scored in the second. Co-captain Jaret Anderson-Dolan scored on a spinning strike in front of the net to extend the lead to four.
A nice individual rush by 2019 NHL Draft prospect John Ludvig would get Portland on the board, but Eli Zummack would restore the lead to four before a goal from Joachim Blichfeld (San Jose Sharks) closed out the game.
