BOYD LEADS CANADA PAST FINLAND IN WJ OPENER – Dustin Boyd scored twice to lead Canada to a 5-1 win over Finland on Monday in the opening game of the 2006 IIHF World Junior Championship in Vancouver, B.C.

rThe Moose Jaw Warriors sniper opened the scoring on a first period power play, and added another in the second period to earn Team Canada’s Player of the Game honors in the win.

rKelowna Rockets winger Blake Comeau netted the winner and added an assist for the Canadians, who improve to 1-0 in round-robin play, while Prince Albert Raiders forward Kyle Chipchura and London Knights forward David Bolland also counted.

rJustin Pogge of the Calgary Hitmen turned aside 16 of 17 shots in the Canadian net to earn the win in his first appearance at the World Junior tournament.

rAki Seitsonen of the Prince Albert Raiders scored the lone goal for Finland, and was also named his team’s Player of the Game.

rElsewhere in World Junior action, Everett Silvertips rookie Peter Mueller scored once and added a pair of assists to help the United States to an 11-2 thrashing of Norway in another contest from pool âAâ? in Vancouver.

rIn Kelowna, Saskatoon Blades goaltender Anton Khudobin stopped 32 shots to help Russia to a 5-1 win over Sweden in pool âBâ? action.

rIn other pool âBâ? action, Regina Pats forward Petr Kalus scored the game-winner to lead the Czech Republic to a 5-1 win over Latvia in Kamloops on Monday. Everett Silvertips forward Karel Hromas also tallied for the Czechs.
