KOOTENAY ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND – Dale Mahovsky scored a hat trick to lead the visiting Kootenay Ice to a 7-1 victory over the Kamloops Blazers last night in game six of their first-round match-up.

rWith the victory, Kootenay wins the best-of-seven series 4-2 and advances to the second round of the post-season.

rRyan Russell and Chad Greenan each tallied a goal and an assist for the Ice, who also got goals from Andy Bossence and Steven DaSilva, while Adam Cracknell chipped in three assists in the victory. Jeff Glass turned in a 22-save effort for the win.

rMatt Kassian scored the lone goal for the Blazers while Devan Dubnyk stopped 23 shots in a losing effort. The loss eliminates the Blazers from the post-season.

rElsewhere on Sunday, Andrew Leslie made 15 saves for his first career post-season shutout as the Red Deer Rebels blanked the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers 3-0, forcing a seventh and deciding game in the first-round match-up between the Central division rivals.

rMikko Kuukka scored the game-winner for the Rebels who, with the win, even up the best-of-seven series at 3-3. Karey Pieper and Jared Walker also tallied for the Rebels in the win.

rKevin Nastiuk made 20 saves in a losing cause for the Tigers. Medicine Hat went 0-for-4 on the power play in the defeat.

rThe Tigers will host the seventh and deciding game of the series on Tuesday night in Medicine Hat.
