ICE AND HURRICANES SET TO BATTLE IN YELLOWKNIFE – The Kootenay Ice and Lethbridge Hurricanes hook up on Friday evening for the first of two Western Hockey League exhibition games in Yellowknife, NWT, as teams enter the final weekend of pre-season action ahead of the start of the 2005-06 campaign.

rIt’s the first time a WHL contest will be played in the Northwest Territories since the Medicine Hat Tigers and Edmonton Oil Kings faced off up north in the early 80’s.

rThe Ice and ‘Canes meet up again on Saturday in Yellowknife as both teams wrap up their exhibition schedules.

rOther Friday pre-season action sees the Swift Current Broncos visiting the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Prince Albert Raiders traveling to Moose Jaw to battle the Warriors, the Prince George Cougars hosting the Kamloops Blazers, the Calgary Hitmen and Red Deer Rebels meeting up in Lacombe, AB, the Medicine Hat Tigers visiting the Saskatoon Blades, the Spokane Chiefs hosting the Tri-City Americans, and the Kelowna Rockets meeting the Vancouver Giants in Ladner, B.C.

rCHIEFS AND CATHOLIC CHARITIES TEAM UP TO HELP KATRINA VICTIMS

rThe Spokane Chiefs have teamed up with Catholic Charities to help raise money for displaced Hurricane Katrina victims and will be holding a 50/50 raffle during Friday’s exhibition game versus the Tri-City Americans at Eagles Ice-A-Rena. Half of the money raised will go to the winner of the raffle, while the other half will be donated to Catholic Charities.

rCatholic Charities is a network of 15 social service programs throughout the 13 counties of eastern Washington and serves thousands of low-income, disabled, senior, immigrant, and single-parent families each year. Eighty-five percent of those served are low-income and of other than the Catholic faith. Their services are based on need, not creed.

rIn addition to an 84-year-old father and his 60-year-old son, Catholic Charities is looking forward to serving “five to seven more families that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina,” Catholic Charities Development Director Loreen McFaul said. “Our mission is to serve those in need, who have no where else to turn. Thanks to the generosity of our donors we have the programs and staff in place to assist Hurricane Katrina evacuees with housing, medical care, counseling, food, clothing, and personal items to help them rebuild their lives.”

r”It is incredible how far reaching the impact of the hurricane has been,” Chiefs Managing Partner Bobby Brett said. “The fact that Catholic Charities are stepping up and helping these families start their lives from scratch is a tremendous task and we feel, as a part of this community, we need to help.”

rThe Chiefs will also have opportunities throughout the season, specifically the home opener on Saturday, October 1st versus Tri-City, to help raise funds and awareness for Catholic Charities and the families they are supporting.
