WHL Exhibition Results
PERFECT PRE-SEASON FOR GIANTS AND COUGARS – The 2005 Western Hockey League exhibition schedule wrapped up on the weekend with a full slate of games, including the Kootenay Ice and Lethbridge Hurricanes hooking up for a pair of contests in Yellowknife, NWT.

rThe Vancouver Giants finished the pre-season with a perfect record, winning all eight of their exhibition games, while the Prince George Cougars also finished with an unblemished exhibition record with five wins.
r
rThe WHL regular-season schedule begins on Friday, September 23rd with eight games on tap, including the defending champions Kelowna Rockets hosting the Vancouver Giants.

rCodey Burki scored the game-winner for the Wheat Kings while Mark Derlago, Tyler Dittmer, Riley Day, and John Wikner also tallied in the victory. Tyler Plante made 35 saves for the victory.

rJeremy Schenderling and Donny Lloyd scored for the Broncos while Travis Yonkman made 29 saves in the defeat.

rKootenay 6 vs Lethbridge 5 S/O (at Yellowknife, NWT)

rRyan Russell netted a hat trick for the Ice, who went on to beat the Hurricanes in a shootout. Ben Maxwell and Marek Curilla also scored for the Ice while Dale Mahovsky chipped in three assists. Tyler Pugh and Kris Lazaruk combined for 25 saves in the tie.

rKris Hogg scored twice for the ‘Canes, who also got goals from Rob Klinkhammer, Zach Boychuk, and Ken Petkau. Kevin Opsahl and Justin Mulholland combined for a 33-save effort in the shootout loss.

rDustin Boyd scored twice to lead the Warriors to the victory. Cole Simpson netted once and set up two others while Jason Bast, Bjorn Svensson, and Brennan Wray also tallied in the win. Joey Perricone stopped 15 shots to earn the victory.

rBrent Ottmann scored the lone goal for the Raiders while Brant Hilton and Karsten Felske combined for 40 saves in the defeat.

rDan Gendur beat Blazers goalie Michael Maniago to give the Cougars a 4-3 shootout victory. Blair Stengler, Nick Drazenovic and Evan Fuller scored for the Cougars in regulation while Scott Bowles stopped 21 shots and was perfect in the shootout.

rVictor Bartley, Brock Nixon and C.J. Stretch scored for the Blazers while Maniago turned away 27 shots in regulation.

rMedicine Hat 2 @ Saskatoon 1 S/O

rMichal Psurny scored in regulation time for the Tigers, who went on to win in a shootout, while Blaine Neufeld and Ryan Holfield combined to stop 25 shots in the victory.

rRyan Menei tallied for the Blades while Anton Khudobin turned in a spectacular 58-save performance in a losing cause.

rChris Inglis scored the game’s lone goal to give the Americans the win. Nick Olynyk turned in an impressive 35-save effort for the shutout.

rRyan White scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Hitmen to the win over the Rebels in Lacombe, Alberta. Riley Merkley, Brett Sonne, and Steve Covington also scored in the win while Daniel Spence turned aside 25 shots.

rJosh Gionfriddo scored the lone goal for the Rebels while Andrew Leslie turned aside 41 shots in the defeat.

rTim Kraus scored a natural hat trick in the third period to lift the Giants to a come-from-behind win. David Rutherford also scored for the Giants while Tommy Tartaglione made 14 saves for the victory.

rCody Almond, Colin Joe and Josiah Anderson scored for the Rockets while Devin Murtagh made 19 saves in the defeat.

rRyan Russell and Steven DaSilva each tallied a goal and an assist for the Ice while Mike Busto, Casey Lee and Brett Sutter also tallied in the loss. Taylor Dakers made 23 saves in a losing effort.
