WEDNESDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP

HOLMBERG’S PAIR LEADS CHIEFS PAST BLADES – Mitch Holmberg scored two shorthanded goals as his Spokane Chiefs edged the visiting Saskatoon Blades 2-1 in Western Hockey League action on Wednesday night.

Eric Williams made 27 saves for the Chiefs, who snap a three-game losing skid and move into fifth place in the Western Conference standings.  Brett Stovin scored the only goal for the Blades, who close out their U.S. Division tour with an 0-5 record.

GIANTS 3, ICE 2

Jackson Houck’s power play marker 15:19 into the third period lifted the Vancouver Giants to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Kootenay Ice on Wednesday. Jared Rathjen made 33 saves for the Giants, who improve to 6-0-4-1 over their last 11 outings.  Austin Vetterl scored and set up another versus his former team in the loss for the Ice.

REBELS 6, RAIDERS 3

Haydn Fleury, Conner Bleackley and Dominik Volek each notched a goal and an assist as the Red Deer Rebels doubled up the visiting Prince Albert Raiders 6-3 on Wednesday.  Patrik Bartosak made 31 saves for the Rebels, who overturned a 3-1 deficit with five unanswered goals.

BRONCOS 4, HURRICANES 1

Graham Black netted a goal and two assists as the Swift Current Broncos managed a 4-1 triumph over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes.  Eetu Laurikainen made 35 saves for the Broncos, who were holding their Teddy Bear Toss event at Credit Union i-Plex.

WHEAT KINGS 5, PATS 4

Jayce Hawryluk scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with just 29 seconds remaining in the third period, to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-4 win over the visiting Regina Pats on Wednesday.  John Quenneville picked up three assists for Brandon, who went 3-for-5 on the power play.
