WEDNESDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
‘CANES DOWN HITMEN IN OVERTIME – Mitch Maxwell scored on the power play 1:20 into overtime to lift the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-4 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen in Western Hockey League action on Wednesday.
Alex Kuvaev scored twice, Graham Hood tallied a goal and two assists and Mark Reners scored his third goal of the season for the Hurricanes (10-6-0-3), who stretch their win streak to four games. Brandon Anderson made 20 saves to record his seventh victory of the season.
Jimmy Bubnick, Jon Lawrence, Justin Kirsch and Kris Foucault scored for the Hitmen (4-13-1-0), who rallied from a 4-1 deficit early in the second period only to lose in overtime and stretch their winless streak to 10 games. Michael Snider made 27 saves in the loss.
GIANTS 3, REBELS 2 S/O
Rookie Matt Bellerive’s goal in the seventh round of a shootout was the winner as his Vancouver Giants claimed a 3-2 victory over the visiting Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday.
Jordan Martinook and Luke Fenske scored in regulation for the Giants (12-7-1-1), who scored on four of seven shootout attempts en route to their second straight victory. Brendan Jensen stopped 32 of 34 shots he faced and denied four of seven shooters in the shootout to record his seventh win of the season.
Byron Froese and Dalton Siwak scored in regulation for the Rebels (13-6-1-1), who rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two goals in a 51-second span in the third period only to lose in the shootout. Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves in regulation and overtime, but was beaten four times in the shootout.

ROCKETS 2, OIL KINGS 1
Tyson Barrie’s power play marker 14:49 into the third period was the game-winner as the Kelowna Rockets edged the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 2-1 on Wednesday.
Geordie Wudrick scored his fourth goal in his last two games for the Rockets (9-10-0-0), who stretch their winning streak to five games and move into eighth place in the Western Conference. Adam Brown made 26 saves to backstop the Rockets to the win.
T.J. Foster scored the only goal for the Oil Kings (7-11-0-1), who see a modest two-game winning streak come to an end. Jon Groenheyde made 23 saves in the loss.
THUNDERBIRDS 5, RAIDERS 2
Luke Lockhart and Colin Jacobs each notched a goal and two assists to pace the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds to a 5-2 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday.
Charles Wells, Burke Gallimore and Brendon Dillon each tallied a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds (8-4-2-3), who broke open a 2-2 game with three power play goals in the second period. Calvin Pickard made 27 saves to record his eighth win of the season.
Mark McNeill scored his eighth goal and Sebastian Svendsen added his 11th of the season for the Raiders (6-10-2-2), who have lost two straight and nine of their last 10 games. Eric Williams made 23 saves in a losing cause.

Brad Ross scored 1:06 into overtime to lift the visiting Portland Winterhawks to a 5-4 win over the Regina Pats on Wednesday.
Riley Boychuk – with two goals – Ryan Johansen and Sven Bartschi also scored for the Winterhawks (16-2-0-1), who earn their 10th straight win and sit five points clear for first place in the WHL standings. Mac Carruth made 33 saves to improve his record to 9-1 this season.
Thomas Frazee – with a goal and two assists – Mikael Jung, Colin Reddin and Carter Ashton scored for the Pats (6-10-2-1), who fall to 4-6-2-1 on home ice this season. Damien Ketlo made 36 saves in the defeat.
