WARRIORS EDGE OIL KINGS IN SHOOTOUT – Sam Fioretti scored the winner in a shootout to lift the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings in Western Hockey League action on Wednesday night.
Kenton Miller – with a goal and an assist – Andrew Johnson and Brett Lyon scored in regulation play for the Warriors (23-9-3-1), who earn their fourth consecutive victory and move to within two points of the Oil Kings for top spot in the Eastern Conference. Luke Siemens made 27 saves in regulation, and was beaten just once in the shootout to record the win.
Michael St. Croix and Rhett Rachinski each had a goal and an assist while Tyler Maxwell notched his 20th goal of the season for the Oil Kings (24-9-1-3), who tied the game on Maxwell’s goal late in the third period only to lose in the shootout. Laurent Brossoit made 31 saves through regulation play, but was beaten twice in the shootout to suffer the loss.
WHEAT KINGS 3, PATS 2 O/T
Ryley Miller scored1:23 into overtime to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Regina Pats on Wednesday.
Brenden Walker scored twice and set up Miller’s overtime winner while Michael Ferland drew three assists for the Wheat Kings (21-14-1-1), who have won three of their last five outings and move two points up on Regina for second place in the East Division. Brandon Anderson made 26 saves to post the win.
Lane Scheidl scored both goals for the Pats (19-15-3-1), who move into sole possession of third place in the East Division with the point from the O/T loss. Matt Hewitt turned in a 31-save effort in a losing cause for the Pats.
BLAZERS 3, GIANTS 1
Bronson Maschmeyer’s fourth goal of the season, scored 18:48 into the second period, was the winner as the Kamloops Blazers claimed a 3-1 triumph over the visiting Vancouver Giants on Wednesday.
Austin Madaisky and Chase Schaber also scored and JC Lipon picked up two assists for the Blazers (25-9-1-2), who improve to 3-0-0-2 over their last five games and pad their lead to five points over the Giants for first place in the B.C. Division. Cole Cheveldave made 18 saves to claim his 17th win of the season.
Nathan Burns scored the only goal for the Giants (23-13-1-1), who defeated the Blazers in Vancouver on Tuesday night. Jackson Whistle made 31 saves in the loss.
WINTERHAWKS 6, ROYALS 3
Brad Ross scored twice and Joe Morrow notched a goal and two assists to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 6-3 victory over the visiting Victoria Royals on Wednesday.
Chase De Leo, Taylor Peters and Taylor Leier also scored for the Winterhawks (22-11-2-1), who went 2-for-3 on the power play as they pick up their second straight victory. Mac Carruth made 29 saves to record the victory.
Brandon Magee scored twice and Ben Walker also counted for the Royals (13-21-2-2), who suffer their fifth consecutive setback. Keith Hamilton, a former Winterhawk, turned in a valiant 48-save performance in a losing cause for Victoria.
COUGARS 3, HITMEN 1
John Odgers scored his first WHL goal to help lead the Prince George Cougars to a 3-1 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Wednesday night.
Troy Bourke and Austin Daae also scored for the Cougars (13-21-0-2), who improve to 7-4-0 over their last 11 outings and now sit just two points out of a playoff spot in the Western conference. Drew Owsley turned in a 37-save performance to backstop the Cougars to the win.
Cody Sylvester scored the only goal for the Hitmen (17-16-2-1), who suffer their fourth loss in a row but remain in eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Brandon Glover made 27 saves in the defeat.
THUNDERBIRDS 4, SILVERTIPS 3
Luke Lockhart scored the only goal in a shootout to lift the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds to a 4-3 victory over the Everett Silvertips on Wednesday.
Luckhart scored twice in regulation play while Cason Machacek also counted for the Thunderbirds (15-17-0-1), who defeat the ‘Tips in a shootout for the second consecutive night. Calvin Pickard turned in a 32-save performance in regulation play and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to claim the win.
Ryan Harrison scored twice and set up another while Teal Burns also scored for the Silvertips (6-21-1-7), who suffer their fourth loss in a row and fall to 1-7 in games decided in a shootout. Kent Simpson made 28 saves through regulation and overtime, but was beaten once in the shootout for the loss.
