WEDNESDAY’S WHL PLAYOFF ROUND-UP

TIGERS MELT ICE IN GAME 7 SHOWDOWN – Trevor Cox scored twice in the third period, including the go-ahead goal just 11 seconds into the frame, as the Medicine Hat Tigers skated to a 4-1 win over the Kootenay Ice in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference second-round series on Wednesday night in Medicine Hat, AB.

The Game 7 victory clinches a 4-3 best-of-seven series win for the Tigers, sending them through to the 2014 WHL Eastern Conference Final where they’ll face the two-time defending conference champion Edmonton Oil Kings.

Cole Sanford scored a late empty-net goal while also assisting on both of Cox’s markers, and Steve Owre got his third playoff goal for the Tigers, who are making their first Eastern Conference Final appearance since the 2010-11 season. 

Marek Langhamer turned in a 43-save performance to seal the win for Medicine Hat.

Landon Peel scored the game’s opening goal for the Ice, just 51 seconds into the opening period.  Mackenzie Skapski made 24 saves in the loss for Kootenay, who see their season come to a end.
